Netflix’s The Crash has renewed interest in one of the most gruelling murders of 2022. The documentary follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21) who was convicted of dual murder. She crashed her car into a wall at 100mph and killed two passengers. One of them was her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and the other was their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.
Ever since the documentary was released, people have been searching for everything related to the case. And now unseen footage of Dominic Russo’s mother surfaced, in which she was informed about her son’s death, and the news devastated her. The footage shared by TMZ was recorded shortly after the 2022 crash in Strongsville, Ohio.

In the footage, officers were seen approaching the Russo residence and informing his mother that her son had died in the high-speed crash involving his girlfriend, Mackenzie Shirilla. As soon as the news was shared with her, Dominic’s mother was seen shaking, shocked. As officers explained to her that there had been a serious crash and that Dominic did not survive, his mom attempted to run away from the officers before dropping herself on the floor.

On July 31, 2022, then-17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving a Toyota Camry through Strongsville, Ohio, with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. According to reports, Shirilla was driving Dom and Davion from a friend's house early in the morning when she crashed the car into a commercial building. Reports suggest that she was driving 100 miles per hour, and the crash took the lives of both Dom and Davion, although she herself survived.

After a toxicology test was conducted, it was revealed that the 17-year-old had no alcohol in her system. This prompted the police to begin investigating the case as murder. The prosecution used the teen's persona as an influencer as criminal evidence in court that she intentionally murdered her boyfriend and his friend. Investigators cited the absence of skid marks or signs of braking attempts as evidence and argued that the crash was deliberate.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim Troup told the court that the teen wanted to murder Russo after their months-long fling fizzled out. Flanagan, who was just looking for a ride home, was just innocent “cargo”. Ultimately, Judge Nancy Margaret Russo also concluded that the car crash was premeditated. Mackenzie was found guilty of 12 felony charges, including two counts of murder.

According to the Ohio Supreme Court document, Mackenzie and Dominic are believed to have been in a long-standing relationship. But their relationship had many issues, especially in the six months before the horrifying crash. The couple dated for four years but often fought and had disagreements. The two often would break up only to get back as per mom claimed in the docs.
His mother also revealed that there were tense moments between the two, where they hurled threats at each other. His mother also recalled the two having a fight, including the July 2022 fight, where Mackenzie threatened to break into Dominic's home if he broke up with her. She also recalled a fight that happened a day before the crash.
