When Bollywood was maligned in the drug angle of Sushant Singh Rajput's death case, Javed Akhtar had raised his voice against the defamation. In an interview with Barkha Dutt, Javed Akhtar was asked how he would react if he found his children, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar smoking marijuana. Javed ji had answered, "I would tell them not to do it, it's not right. But they are grown ups. It's like when I gave up alcohol in 1991, and haven't taken a sip since then. I used to drink everyday. I have come to the conclusion that if you have any kind of intoxication, it can harm you. Tomorrow if I come to know my daughter smokes marijuana, I'll tell her she shouldn't be doing this. If she listens to me that's fine, but if she doesn't, she's a grown up girl. It's the same with my son."
The celebrity siblings, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar had congratulated their dad, Javed Akhtar for winning the prestigious Richad Dawkins award some time ago. Farhan's congratulatory post for his paa, Javed ji could be read as "Congratulations pa.. for being the first Indian to receive the Richard Dawkins Award for critical thinking and advancing humanist values. In an old interview with Rediff.com, Javed ji had opened up on his divorce with his first wife, Honey Irani and how it had affected his kids, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. He had shared, "It would be naive on my part to believe that it must not have made a difference. But on the positive side, my children have always seen mutual respect between Honey and me. We had extremely civilised relations which kept growing better and friendlier with time. Today, Honey and I are the best of friends."
