The devastating news of his death was confirmed by his founding mountaineering and adventure guiding company, Elite Exped. Nirmal, along with nine climbers, reportedly went missing after an avalanche on July 30, 2026, on Broad Peak, an 8,047m (26,400ft) mountain in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. It is worth mentioning that Nirmal 'Nims' Purja was one of the most recognised figures in mountaineering.
Nirmal 'Nims' Purja's company announces his untimely death at 43
Nepal is mourning the loss of one of its greatest mountaineers, Nirmal 'Nims' Purja, today on August 1, 2026. A while back, Nirmal’s mountaineering and adventure guiding company, Elite Exped, which he founded years back, took to their Instagram handle to announce his untimely death. Sharing the disheartening news of his death, the company wrote:
"Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive. Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy, including his trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. Our deepest thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and loved ones. No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, and we ask that everyone respect their privacy as they grieve."
In the same note, the company paid a heartfelt tribute to Nirmal. They described him as a leader who inspired millions through his courage, humility and strong conviction that human potential is far greater than he or she could have imagined. Expressing their grief, they wrote:
"The world has lost one of mountaineering's greatest climbers; a leader who inspired millions through his courage, humility and unwavering belief that human potential is far greater than we often imagine. More than his extraordinary achievements, he wanted to show the world what was possible when you dared to dream bigger, believed in yourself and refused to accept limitations. Through his actions, he inspired millions of people to believe that they, too, could achieve more than they ever thought possible. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he changed and the people he inspired to climb their own mountains."
The company concluded the note with an emotional statement. They also expressed their heartfelt gratitude to search and rescue teams. They wrote:
"We also extend our sincere gratitude to the search and rescue teams and everyone who supported the response under incredibly difficult circumstances. Out of respect for all the families involved, we will not be making any further comment beyond information confirmed by the relevant authorities. Nims, and to all those who lost their lives. You will never be forgotten; your spirit, your purpose and your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."

Currently, the mountaineers who closely followed the life of Nirmal 'Nims' Purja are heartbroken. He was born in a small village in Nepal's mountainous Myagdi district. He hailed from a family of Gurkhas, a world-famous group of Nepalese soldiers who have served in different armed forces, including the British Army.
Nirmal followed his father and elder brothers’ footsteps, and at the age of 18, he joined the Gurkhas in 2003. Years later, in 2009, he joined the UK Special Forces. His mountaineering achievements earned him an MBE, a civilian honour, from Queen Elizabeth II in 2018. Nirmal became a star in 2019 as he climbed the 14 peaks in the shortest amount of time. According to reports, took six months and six days to do it.
