Erling Haaland calls Norway's win in FIFA World Cup 2026 a gift from God
Erling Haaland is once again hogging the headlines after his impeccable performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Norway won 2-1 against Brazil on Sunday, July 5, 2026 (ET), reaching the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the men's team's history. The defeat also marked the end of an era for Brazil, with Neymar Jr. announcing his retirement from international football after the match following the five-time world champions' shocking elimination.
After a quiet opening, Erling Haaland has proven why competitors should not take the team lightly. Haaland came alive in the closing stages, scoring twice to send Norway into the last eight and spark celebrations across the Scandinavian nation. The turning point came after a second-half hydration break when Norway coach, Stale Solbakken urged his star striker to empty the tank and attack his competition with all his might. The green light from the coach set the motion, which transformed Norway's game plan.

The message had the desired effect. Introduced at half-time, Andreas Schjelderup transformed Norway's attack and created both goals for Haaland. After the game, Haaland reflected on the massive win and called it a gift from god. He further admitted that it was one of the most insane days in Norwegian history and was quoted as saying:
"Maybe this will write history in Norway. Everyone just needs to enjoy themselves. This is just an insane day. It’s one of the most insane days in Norwegian history. Just enjoy it, embrace it and enjoy the moment."
Neymar Jr. announces international retirement
While Team Norway was filled with joy after the milestone win, Brazil and their fans were left heartbroken. His farewell came after Erling Haaland struck twice late in the match to send Norway into the quarter-finals and Brazil back home. Neymar Jr. was able to pull one goal back from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of stoppage time after Leo Ostigard was penalised for fouling Casemiro. Reflecting on his final appearance for Brazil, Neymar said:
"I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here; I finished here."
Talking about Neymar's international career, he has had an impeccable run, including his stellar victory in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and an Olympic gold medal at the Rio 2016 Games. However, his place in Brazil's World Cup squad remained uncertain until the final stages due to fitness concerns. Head coach, Carlo Ancelotti eventually included the experienced forward in the 26-man squad.

Nonetheless, the final whistle didn't just end Brazil's FIFA World Cup 2026 journey; it also brought Neymar Jr. to tears. After the 2-1 defeat to Norway, the veteran forward sank to his knees in prayer before breaking down, and the emotional scenes from the pitch quickly went viral. A clip that has now gone viral on social media showed Neymar struggling to hold back his tears before teammate Raphinha walked over to console him. The pair embraced as the reality of Brazil's elimination sank in, and the veteran forward could not hide his disappointment.
