For the unversed, Elizabeth Holmes is the founder of Theranos, which is a tech firm. Under her leadership, a device was invented that could diagnose an illness by analyzing blood drawn from a single finger prick. Billy was Elizabeth's fiance when his family believed that she had brainwashed him.
Despite attempts by Billy's close friends and family, he decided to go ahead with the marriage. Evans' entire family tried to talk to him about his marriage to Holmes, and a source close to the publication mentioned:
"His family is like, 'What the fuck are you doing?' It’s like he’s been brainwashed."

According to the publication, Evans' family claimed that even people close to him were worried about his decision to be involved with Holmes. Her company, Theranos, had already become the subject of various legal investigations and also intense scrutiny.
Evans, on his end, had told his friends that, "The media has it all wrong about her." The couple had no plans to dissolve the relationship. Several people reportedly had told Evans that he was being manipulated and also controlled by Elizabeth.
Speaking of Evans, his grandparents had founded a hospitality company that operated three luxury hotels in San Diego. According to the Evans Hotels website, William and Anne Evans founded the company in 1953. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2015.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Evans has completed his Bachelor of Science in Economics. He also studied at Fudan University in Shanghai, where he focused on Chinese literature and language. He has also been associated with Stealth Startup and was earlier employed at LinkedIn.
Evans also moved to Luminar Technologies, which is a self-driving car company, and played the role of a special projects manager. It was in 2018 that he and Holmes got engaged.
A mutual friend introduced them at a charity event in 2017. They spent three hours in conversation during the first meeting. Earlier, in an interview with the New York Times, Elizabeth had spoken about how Evans felt about entering a relationship with her. In her words:
"It had been two years of all this stuff written about me, and I think you get to know someone in a totally different way when you walk in with that skepticism versus if you meet when everything is sunshine and roses. That allowed us to get to know each other in a really deep way."
Holmes had founded Theranos with a grand promise of changing the landscape of blood testing. The company alleged that the technology had the potential to perform an array of tests with just a very small amount of blood. Later, investigations noted issues with the company's claims and also the technology.
Holmes's life changed when, in 2022, she was convicted on four varied counts of defrauding investors and also conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison, and since May 2023 she has been serving her sentence.
When the verdict related to Holmes' prison sentence was announced, she had shown no visible emotion. Evans looked shaken and had to get a drink of water during a break after the verdict was declared.
