In an emotional Instagram post, Elina revealed the most heartbreaking news of her personal life. She revealed that she is parting ways with Gael. However, despite their marriage coming to an end, their primary focus is on their daughter and her well-being. For the unversed, the couple has an eight-year age gap, with Gael older than Elina.
Sharing the reason for their separation, Elina mentioned that she needs to find herself again, away from the roles she has played as a wife, mother, and athlete. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Ska, in October 2022. In her post, Elina revealed that she has been fighting a war on her mental and emotional front.
She thanked her husband for understanding her and being with her through the most difficult phase of her life. She revealed that the war in Ukraine has impacted her deeply, and her husband saw it all and never let go of her. They stayed together as they fought through the ups and downs of their lives. She wrote:
"Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside. This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share. Gael saw all of it. He never let go of my hand. We fought through this together for a long time, with everything we had. But some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you."
Elina revealed that their daughter, Skai, would always come first. While their wedding is ending, their family is not. They will be her parents and support her every step of the way. She wrote:
"With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage. It is the hardest truth I have ever had to face and the hardest thing I have ever had to tell the person I love. Gael listened. He has respected what I need with a strength and grace I will never forget. Gael has loved me through my greatest joys and my darkest moments, and I have loved him with all my heart. Together, we built a beautiful life, and we were given the most precious gift of all, our daughter, Skai."
It is worth mentioning that Elina and Gael had earlier taken a break from their relationship in February 2021. After a few months, they reconciled and announced their engagement in April 2021, and got married in July 2021. Elina stepped away from tennis in 2025. She wanted to focus on her health and recharge after a demanding year.
The break gave her a chance to step back from her professional commitments. Now, the latest development in her life shows that a lot has been going on personally. The famous tennis player made it clear that after the separation, her daughter would remain their priority, and they would continue to co-parent.
Elina announced the separation the same month Gael retired from professional tennis, ending a career that lasted more than two decades. Elina also asked people to understand their situation as they adjust to the new dynamics. She also made it clear that there was no one at fault and their daughter would continue to have both parents with her.
