Gael Monfils is a French professional tennis player celebrated for his athleticism, showmanship, and longevity on the ATP Tour. Born in Paris, he turned pro in 2004 and quickly built a reputation as one of the most entertaining athletes in the sport.
Early in his career, Monfils broke through as a junior World No. 1, winning multiple junior Grand Slam titles. That success carried over to the senior level. He entered the top 100 in his teens and reached his first ATP final in 2005. His game has always been built around explosive speed, elastic defense, and the ability to turn defense into attack in a single point.
Fans know him for diving volleys, sliding on hard courts, and shots that look impossible until he makes them. Monfils has spent the majority of his career inside the top 50. His peak came in 2016 when he reached a career-high World No. 6. He has won multiple ATP titles across different surfaces and has been a regular presence in the later rounds of Masters 1000 events.

Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils have been married for five years
Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils made their relationship public in early 2018, after both were already established on the WTA and ATP Tours. They were spotted attending each other’s matches on a few occasions. Back in 2019, Gael addressed his relationship with Elina and said:
“We help each other a lot. She understands what I’m going through, and I understand what she’s going through.”
Elina said in the same conversation that she was happy to have someone who understands tennis better. The pair continued to support each other at Grand Slams and other tour events for the next few years. On April 3, 2021, Monfils popped the question to Svitolina, who later announced the engagement on social media with a photo of the ring.
They tied the knot around a month later in July 2021 in Geneva, Switzerland. The pair organised a private ceremony, which was attended by close family and friends. Both posted photos afterward. In October 2022, they announced they were expecting their first child, and their daughter Skai was born in the same month.
After becoming parents, the couple opened up about how it changed their approach to scheduling and travel. In 2023, Elina said that she and her husband have turned into a team inside and outside the court. Monfils also said in the same conversation:
“We try to travel together when we can. It’s not easy, but we make it work.”
Since Svitolina’s return to the WTA in 2023, they have coordinated their tournament calendars. Notably, the duo is doing this to ensure that they can be with their daughter when any one of them plays in the field.
