'Dutton Ranch' Episode 5 Recap, Beth And Rip Start Working For Beulah As A Major Character Dies

After last week's heart-rending cattle crisis left the Dutton Ranch with no clear future, Beth and Rip were clearly headed for a Plan B, but no one would have thought the decision would be this. If you, too, felt a sense of relief with this week's episode title, well, you were fooled. The concept of "peace" seems like a faraway dream.

Episode 5 of Dutton Ranch, titled Peaceful Find Peace, finally reveals what the show's endgame might be. And it begins with 'Beth' (Kelly Reilly) and 'Rip' (Cole Hauser) doing the unthinkable: working for their biggest rivals.

(This article contains major spoilers for Dutton Ranch Episode 5: Peaceful Find Peace.)

Why are Beth and Rip working for Beulah?

After the unforgettable trauma of having to kill their much-treasured cattle, the Duttons are neck-deep in financial disaster. Top realizes there's no ranch left for them to run. So he has to make the unthinkable decision. He swallows his pride and approaches 'Beulah Jackson' (Annette Bening) with a proposition. Instead of fighting the ranch, why not help run it?

Desperate for survival, Rip quickly lands himself a job managing the troubled bunkhouse and cattle operations at Beulah Jackson's 10-Petal Ranch, and soon establishes his authority. Within hours, he fires the increasingly problematic 'Chet' (Hart Denton). Meanwhile, Beth starts to dig into Beulah's finances, and she realizes something interesting. It turns out that despite its reputation, 10-Petal Ranch isn't as stable as it seems.

With this new information, Beth believes she will be a great asset to help modernize the business, attract wealthier buyers, and protect the ranch from future financial disasters. She directly walks up to Beulah with her pitch and straight-up demands a five-year contract and 20 percent of the profits. She explains:

"Rip is foreman. I take your steaks to market. We manage everything for you. I want 20% of the profits, and in five years Rip and I are out."

And surprisingly, the Jackson matriarch agrees! Well, that surely wasn't what we had expected. By the end of the episode, both Rip and Beth are officially working for the Jackson family, but neither can fully trust the people around them. And they are probably right not to, given Beulah's past actions and potential involvement in the cattle disaster.

Beth finally knows the truth about Wes's body

At 10-Petal, Rip hears conflicting stories from ranch heads regarding 'Wes's (Nakoa DeCoite) mysterious disappearance. To mention, Rip had stumbled upon Wes's corpse towards the beginning of the series, which had mysteriously appeared on the Dutton Ranch, and he had to secretly dispose of the body without Beth knowing. After piecing things together, he realizes that there was something far darker behind Wes's death than anyone wants to admit.

Rip's suspicions deepen when tensions over Wes's disappearance boil over at the 10-Petal Ranch. After firing Chet, the disgruntled ranch hand begins threatening 'Joaquin' (Juan Pablo Raba) and 'Austin' (Sterlin English), hinting that he knows far more than he should. A candid conversation with Austin finally gives Rip enough pieces of the puzzle to realize something sinister happened to Wes, and that he may have unknowingly helped cover it up. With this realization, he has no other option than to confess the truth to Beth, and needless to say, she isn't thrilled.

Is this really the end of Dwight?

Last week's episode introduced viewers to the character of 'Dwight White', an ageing cowboy played by veteran actor Ray McKinnon, with whom 'Carter' (Finn Little) forms a strange friendship. While it seemed like there must be more to their newfound friendship, with Dwight already being seen as a major character, it came as a huge shock when things turned deadly.

After Carter skips school once again to spend time at Dwight's exotic animal property, he unexpectedly finds himself caught in the middle of a police raid. Authorities move in on Dwight, who attempts to flee. Just moments later, shots are fired. By the time Carter arrives at the scene, Dwight is on the ground near the leopard enclosure, bleeding to death. According to 'Sheriff Wade' (Josh Stewart), Dwight was a criminal known to prey on vulnerable people through fraud schemes. However, for Carter, it is yet another traumatic loss in his already tragic life.

Peace is nowhere near the Duttons, at least for a while

If Episode 5 proved anything, it's that Beth and Rip's partnership with Beulah is unlikely to remain peaceful for long. With Beth at a control of Beulah's finances and Rip controlling the ranch and uncovering more about Wes's disappearance, the secrets buried at the 10-Petal Ranch are becoming harder to ignore. For now, multiple cover-ups are hanging over the Jackson family, and things are looking anything but peaceful.

Episode 6 of Dutton Ranch will air on Friday, June 12, 2026, dropping on Paramount+ at 3:00 AM (ET). What are your thoughts on the storyline so far?
