It's official! Dutton Ranch has made it to the list of Taylor Sheridan's all-time best works as the perfect Yellowstone spin-off. Just three episodes in, the series has left viewers on edge as things are already spiralling out of control for our protagonists, 'Beth Dutton' (Kelly Reilly) and 'Rip Wheeler' (Cole Hauser). Destiny doesn't want them to settle into their new Texan life just yet.
Just when the couple thought they had escaped the chaos of Montana for a quieter life in Texas, disaster struck from every direction, including a devastating foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that could basically be the death sentence of the entire ranch. So much has happened in just one episode that we need to talk about it! [Major spoiler alert as we decode Dutton Ranch episode 3.]

By the end of Episode 1, we see Rip unexpectedly stumbling upon the corpse of 'Wes Ayers' (Hart Denton), who was killed on Yellowstone, buried on their land. Rather than reporting it, Rip decides to hide the corpse instead, in an attempt to protect his family from yet another explosive ranch feud. The new episode, titled Act of God Business, opens the morning after Rip secretly disposed of Wes’ body. Beth notices Rip vanished overnight, but he keeps the truth hidden, hoping to protect the peaceful life she desperately wants.

Beth heads to Dallas to push her ranch-to-table beef business, while Rip stays behind to handle problems at the ranch. In Dallas, Beth manages to charm 'Giles Moore' (Sebastian Arcelus), a luxury restaurant executive, after she boldly orchestrates a steak ambush in his hotel's kitchen.

However, her plans quickly hit a wall when she learns that the majority of restaurants in Texas are dominated by Frontier Hospitality Group, a powerful hospitality supplier that will be difficult to beat. Beth soon realises that the real obstacle is 'Zane Nash', the powerful businessman who controls food supply deals for most luxury hotels across Texas. As Giles himself warns her, "Zane Nash can be… difficult."

Things get even stranger when 'Beulah Jackson's' (Annette Bening) adopted son, 'Joaquin Reyes' (Juan Pablo Raba), walks in at the restaurant. The mysterious Jackson family associate clearly seems to be keeping tabs on Beth, raising more suspicions about the Jackson matriarch's brewing rivalry against the Duttons.

One of the biggest shocks of the episode comes when a woman named 'Anna Dupree' (Dale Dickey) comes storming onto the ranch, fuming in anger as she threatens to kill 'Zachariah' (Marc Menchaca), the Dutton Ranch's hand, with her gun. After the initial chaos, Rip eventually learns about Zachariah's explosive past. As it turns out, he had accidentally killed Anna's daughter, Theresa "Terry" Jane, in a drunk driving incident years earlier.
Before joining Beth and Rip's ranch, Zachariah had been incarcerated and had only been released recently. Later that evening, he opens up about his past to Rip, admitting that he was the reason that his ladylove, Terry, is dead. He hints that he accidentally ran her over with his truck after an argument. Before trailing off, Zachariah says:
"We were in love...We got in an argument. I was drunk. I was blinded by hurt. I tried to run away. I threw my truck in reverse…"

While 'Azul' (J.R. Villareal) assures him that it was an accident, Zachariah remorsefully responds, "...it don’t feel like an accident." So, that was possibly the reason that Zachariah was in prison when Rip picked him up and gave him responsibility for his ranch. This heartbreaking revelation adds emotional depth to the ranch crew, and we learn that nearly everyone on the Dutton Ranch is carrying painful baggage.

While the episode had been undoubtedly painful thus far, the true nightmare hits the ranch when Azul discovers a sick bull foaming at the mouth with bloody hooves. Veterinarian 'Everett' (Ed Harris) confirms what they had been fearing: the bull has gotten the foot-and-mouth disease, one that can easily "burn through your whole damn herd if you don’t act quick." With the highly contagious virus, the ranch's entire herd may be destroyed within days, destroying Beth and Rip’s growing cattle business before it even begins.
Rip immediately suspects the infected bull they purchased at auction may have been intentionally planted, especially after rival ranch owner Beulah Jackson mysteriously stopped bidding during the sale. By the episode’s devastating ending, another calf is already infected, and it's clear that the disease has already started spreading rapidly through the herd.
While it is not confirmed outright, Episode 3 strongly hints that Beulah Jackson may be connected to the devastating foot-and-mouth disease outbreak threatening the Dutton Ranch. As Everett points out, there hasn’t been a case of FMD in decades, but the infected bull may have brought the disease onto the property.

The timing raises eyebrows because the bull was purchased at the same auction where Beulah suddenly stopped bidding and allowed Beth and Rip to win. It feels far too convenient, given the already escalating tensions between the Jacksons and the Duttons after Wes' death, and the ongoing cover-up surrounding his disappearance.
Meanwhile, Beulah faces mounting problems of her own. Wes' widow is nowhere to be found, and 'Sheriff Wade' (Josh Stewart) continues asking questions. Amid all this, she receives a mysterious call with the cryptic message, "We have a lot of cattle moving this month. I expect no surprises." The plot keeps thickening.
Episode 4 of Dutton Ranch will air on Friday, May 22, 2026, dropping on Paramount+ at 3:00 AM (ET). What are your thoughts on the storyline so far?
