Amid Duncan's death, the focus has also shifted to the musician’s personal life. Notably, a few months before his passing, Duncan posted about his two ‘favorite girlfriends.’
Duncan Sheik's post about his favorite girlfriends grabs attention
For those unaware, Duncan Sheik has over 1.4k posts on his Instagram profile. The musician would often share his selfies and other glimpses from his daily life with his 17k followers. Duncan's sudden death has led fans to revisit his old posts and share their tributes.
However, a post that grabbed the most attention was one that featured two young women. The caption was even more intriguing as Duncan, seemingly referring to the women, wrote:
“Two of my favourite ‘girlfriends’ from my dissolute twenties and thirties. I will say nothing further but merely sing their praises.”
In the picture, the women could be seen posing inside a room while they hugged each other. One of Duncan’s girlfriends could be seen wearing a red blazer, a black mini skirt, and black stockings. The other girlfriend donned an all-black outfit. Both women had the biggest smiles on their faces.
Duncan Sheik might have been feeling nostalgic about his past as he made the post just a few months before his death, on July 30, 2026. A curious fan of the musician commented on the post, asking, “Are they Filipinas?” However, as Duncan promised in the post’s caption, he truly did not say anything further about them, and the fan’s question remained unanswered.

On September 18, 2026, Duncan Sheik's death was confirmed by his family in a statement to PEOPLE. Reports revealed that the Barely Breathing singer had passed away a day before the news broke, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, shortly after he was hospitalized.
The same was revealed by his mother, Suzanne Sheik. For those wondering about Duncan's cause of death, it was revealed to be heart failure, leading to cardiac arrest.
A spokesperson on behalf of Duncan's family said in a statement to the publication that the world has lost one of its most talented singers. Noting how his music had touched many and left a mark on the cultural landscape, the spokesperson added:
"It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik. The world has lost a singular talent and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit Barely Breathing to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan's artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape."
In the same statement, they also went on to say that Duncan Sheik would be remembered as a sensitive, witty, and intelligent person. The spokesperson thanked all fans and friends of the artist for the outpouring of love and support they have shown following Duncan's death. They shared:
"Duncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan passed away last night, surrounded by love."
