Netflix's recently released true-crime documentary, The Crash has re-ignited people’s attention to a sensational case. The story follows the highly-publicised Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21) who was convicted of dual murder. After multiple trials, the court gave a verdict on the case and accused Shirilla of intentionally slamming her car into a brick building at 100 mph, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend, Davion Flanagan.
As per the latest reports, Mackenzie has appealed to the Supreme Court to review her double murder conviction. As per TMZ, Mackenzie’s lawyers filed the appeal, alleging that “there is medical evidence” that Shirilla “suffered from a pre-existing medical condition that could have caused her to black out while driving.” They also urge the court to investigate the case again. The court has not yet ruled whether or not it will hear Mackenzie’s case.

In a conversation with People, Dominic Russo, sister, Christine Russo spoke about Mackenzie’s recent court appeal. Dominic was Mackenzie boyfriend and one of the unfortunate victims of the crash. Speaking about the appeal, Christine revealed:
“She's always appealing her conviction. She can't take accountability or responsibility. She has shown no remorse. She is a typical narcissist.”

Shirilla was convicted of double murder and was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life with eligibility for parole in 2037. In the same conversation, Christine also shared how Mackenzie has been acting like a princess in prison. Speaking of the same, Christine shared:
“She's just on her high horse in prison. She's in prison and is very much acting like a princess and like she's famous. After she killed my brother and Davion, within hours she was making TikToks of herself and trying to get modeling gigs.”

Mackenzie Shirila’s sensational case made headlines at the time it took place but now, with the release of Netflix's The Crash, interest in the case has soared. In the documentary, Shirilla revealed what happened during the crash and said that it was due to her 2017 diagnosis of POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), causing her to “black out”, after which she didn’t remember anything.
