Did Nancy Guthrie's Ransom Note Reveal She Was Dead? FBI, And News Outlets Make Contrasting Claims

Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has dominated the headlines since the early months of 2026. But, there is no major lead to find the 84-year-old. Meanwhile, things recently took a dramatic turn after different claims about a ransom note allegedly linked to the case surfaced. While some reports claim that it confirms that Nancy has died, another news outlet claims that the note it received did not mention her death. The contrasting claims have only deepened the questions while the case remains unsolved. 

FBI and TMZ claims that the ransom note about Nancy Guthrie did not mention her death 

According to TMZ, the ransom note they received was considered authentic by the investigators. But, it did not contain any apology or a direct statement that confirmed Nancy Guthrie's death. They explained that shortly after Nancy's alleged kidnapping, they got a series of emails from a man who claimed he knew about the kidnapper's identity and Nancy's location. He also clarified that he was not involved in the crime. But the person demanded one Bitcoin in exchange for the information. He asked them to comply with the demand urgently. 

However, TMZ reported that the man sent another email the next day, stating that time was no longer important. So, they interpreted that this message allegedly hinted at Nancy's death. Still, the sender continued to give information. He also claimed that Nancy had been taken to Mexico and expressed fear of retaliation if he gave more details. They claimed they were in contact with the FBI and believed the sender could be credible. The outlet argued that a scammer would create urgency in such cases and not reduce pressure. 

The media company even went to the FBI about the possibility of paying the requested Bitcoin, in the hope that he could provide new information without getting in the way of the investigation. Although the agents found the idea interesting at first, they gradually stopped replying to the inquiries. The news outlet noted that the FBI was previously cooperative during the investigation. But they suddenly became silent. In turn, there was no public explanation about their stance on the emails. 

Earlier reports claimed that the ransom note mentioned Nancy's death

The latest update is different from previous reports. Earlier reports suggested a far more disturbing note. They cited sources familiar with the investigation who received an email on February 4, 2026. It was an apology for Nancy Guthrie's accidental death. It reportedly came from the same IP address used to send earlier ransom notes. In fact, it contained details known only to the people closest to the case.

According to those reports, the kidnappers initially asked for USD 4 million in Bitcoin and claimed that Nancy was "safe but scared". But another follow up message after a few days suggested that she had unintentionally died. At the same time, they asked for a fee to get her body. Investigators believe the communications were important because they shifted attention from a kidnapping case to a possible homicide. However, the latest update differs from the claim, creating uncertainty about what is true. 

Nancy Guthrie's missing case has no answers

Nancy Guthrie had disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home during the early hours of February 1, 2026. According to the authorities, she was kidnapped. Since then, both the FBI and local law enforcement agencies have been investigating the case. But despite months of search, surveillance reviews, and countless tips, they have no suspects or information. Some leads suggest possible burial sites and signtiming. Yet, it failed to give conclusive evidence.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie has openly spoken about the emotional toll of her mother's disappearance. She revealed that she continues to think about her missing mom every day while holding a hope for answers. At the same time, they have increased the reward many times for information that might save her.
