'Dhurandhar's Real Chaudhary Aslam Was A Crime Fighter, Faced Death Threats, Says Pak Police Officer

Dhurandhar, which is reportedly based on the Lyari gang wars, has made waves even across borders with its widespread popularity. With the characters in the film inspired by real-life people, the audience has become increasingly curious about each person depicted. Amid this, the Sindh Police Deputy Inspector General, who once mentored under Chaudhary Aslam, spoke about the encounter specialist whose role was played by Sanjay Dutt in the movie.

Pakistani police officer shared why Chaudhary Aslam is still such a popular figure, nearly a decade after his death

The Sindh Police DIG, Omar Shahid Hamid, opened up about his mentor, Chaudhary Aslam, in an interview with Digy Tales. He described the late cop as a 'crime fighter'. DIG Hamid stated that Aslam was a debated and infamous figure in Pakistan because many did not agree with his tactics. However, he also praised his mentor for fighting a 'multi-front war' and not choosing a side between the gangs, which many other police officers had done before him.

DIG Hamid stated that many police officers chose to side with one gang or the other so as not to make everyone their enemy. But Chaudhary Aslam only cared about bringing peace to the citizens. He was set in his principles that all of the parties involved were breaking the law. Talking about his late mentor, DIG Hamid shared:

“Aslam at heart was a crime fighter. I know there has been a lot of debate about him, about his tactics, about whether he was a good cop or a bad cop, and I’m not defending any of that. But I will say this, for a police officer to take on, one after another, and often at the same time, the biggest menaces to law and order and criminality in the 1990s, which was the MQM’s militant arm at the time, and then, in the early 2000s, the Lyari gang wars, the various characters within Lyari like Rehman Dakait, and to not side with one or the other, as many police officers have done, but to take on all sides simultaneously, to fight a multi-front war."

Chaudhary Aslam had faced death threats and suspensions

The police officer shared that Chaudhary Aslam was under a lot of pressure. The government would tell him to clean up Lyari and make it crime-free. However, if the government changed, the new party in power would target him, lodge FIRs, and threaten him with suspension. Apart from that, Aslam and his family's life were in danger as well. The DIG recalled that once Aslam's home was blown up, but fortunately, all of them survived. However, later, Chaudhary Aslam was killed in 2014 in a targeted bomb blast. Omar Hamid said:

"In Aslam’s case, his house was blown up before he was killed, and it was just pure luck that his family, and he, survived. So, for someone whose own circumstances were like that, it’s not a normal life. And again, I will give him that extra bit of leeway because the other characters who were around him profited a lot from these kinds of situations and became billionaires."
