Karan Johar’s upcoming film, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani will bring the iconic jodi of Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan on the silver screen after ages. The film also features Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and veteran actress, Shabana Azmi. In a recent interview, Dharmendra talked about reuniting with Jaya Bachchan after many years.
Speaking to Zoom, Dharmendra talked about his relationship with Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. When asked about Jaya Bachchan’s crush on him during the making of their iconic film, Guddi and whether it was true that she would hide behind the sofa whenever he would come on the sets, Dharmendra said:
“This is her love and respect speaking. I’ve known Jaya and Amitabh for a very long time now. I still remember the fun times that we had while shooting for Sholay. Bahot mazaa aata ttha. The outdoors were like picnics. The entire unit was like one big family. I got the same feeling while doing Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani."

It was in 1971 when Jaya Bachchan made her acting debut in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s directorial Guddi. The film talked about the influence of celebrities and the world of glamour on people. A 22-year-old Jaya Bachchan played the role of a 16-year-old naive girl ‘Guddi’, who was in love with her screen idol, 'Dharmendra', who appeared in the film as 'Dharmendra'.
Once in an interview with a leading publication, Jaya Bachchan opened up about her fond memories of working opposite Dharmendra in her debut film. Sharing her fan girl moment, Jaya said:
“When I was introduced to him for the first time, there was a sofa there and I hid behind it because I was so nervous. I don't know what to do. There was this fantastic looking man. He was wearing this white pants and shoes, looking like a Greek god.”

Just like her character in Guddi, Jaya was head-over-heels in love with Dharmendra. Once, when she appeared on the celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan, the veteran actress even stated that she wanted to do the role of ‘Basanti’ in Sholay as she was in love with Dharmendra. In her words:
“I should have played Basanti. Because I love Dharmendra.”
Well, we are excited to see Jaya Bachchan sharing the screen with her crush, Dharmendra in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which will release on July 12, 2023.
