"I'm sorry to put you through this," those were the last words the Ancient Aliens star said before hanging up the 911 call, and moments later, he was dead. The popular UFO researcher and YouTuber reportedly took his own life on Monday morning, April 20, 2026, with his official cause of death reported as a "self-inflicted gunshot wound" to the head, ruling suicide. The Boulder County Sheriff's Department reported an unnamed individual with a possible "mental health crisis", later identified as Wilcock.
Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the paranormal expert's "suicide" narrative, TMZ has obtained dispatchers' audio from the day and revealed Wilcock's mental condition before he shot himself in front of the officials.
On April 20, 2026, the Boulder County Sheriff's Department reported that a man experiencing a mental health crisis had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the 1400 block of Ridge Road, Colorado. Deputies responded to the call around 10:44 a.m., treating it as a potential suicide situation, as the caller, now confirmed to be David Wilcock, refused to answer when asked if he was armed.
Officials say Wilcock spoke about his financial and health struggles during the 911 call, telling dispatchers, "I need to leave" and "I will be to the left of the house." He did not confirm whether he intended to harm himself, which heightened concerns. Audio obtained by TMZ captures first responders arriving on scene and identifying him shortly after.
When the deputies arrived, they approached cautiously, for they had no idea of the level of threat they were about to face. Just moments before they approached the house, dispatchers received yet another call from Wilcock, saying, "I’m sorry to put you through this,” before hanging up. Moments later, officers spotted him outside his home holding a gun to his head and immediately took cover. An officer can be heard saying:
"Hold all traffic, he's got a gun!"

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the victim didn't follow the orders, and shortly after, a single gunshot rang out, and deputies can be heard saying, "He shot himself in the head." Wilcock, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene. As per a press release by the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Wilcock died by suicide "within minutes of deputies' arrival."
During a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office on April 23, 2026, Wilcock's grieving family finally spoke out about his death, acknowledging the Ancient Aliens star's "long struggle with depression" and "overwhelming financial debt." Speaking about his upbringing in Schenectady, N.Y., Wilcock had developed a deep curiosity about "telepathy, lucid dreaming, the occult, palmistry, and the predictions of Nostradamus."
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology from the State University of New York at New Paltz, David created a community of his own, one that studies "the importance of focusing one's energies on service to others and the divinity of all human life." They described him as someone with “a big heart” who struggled privately despite his public persona. The family stated:
"In remembering David, it is important to hold more than one truth at once: that some of his work raised concerns about misinformation, and that he was also a person who was on an eternal quest for clarity... Beyond his public persona, he was a human navigating the same complexities and vulnerabilities that shape all our lives."

David Wilcock had been active on his YouTube channel and posted on his X handle hours before his death. The conspiracy theorist had previously opposed the idea of suicide, which now raises more questions about his actual struggle off-camera. The paranormal writer, known for his work on UFO theories and the so-called "disclosure movement", had also hinted at personal difficulties days earlier, telling followers he was dealing with “intense stuff” but expressing gratitude for their support.
