New updates in Nancy Guthrie's case have been emerging since the day she was reported missing. But while her friends and family are awaiting a breakthrough in the case after two months, the attention has shifted to the man leading the search, Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos. Although he was overseeing the search for the 84-year-old, Chris will now have to save his job after his old records sparked controversy.
Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing on February 1, 2026, from her residence in Tucson, Arizona. While Chris Nanos has been investigating the high-profile case, his old records and some alleged discrepancies have come to light. Now, several senior officials, including Pima County Supervisor, Matt Heinz, have revealed that Chris has a strict 10-day deadline to either respond to the questions raised about his past conduct or leave his role. Sharing how they have complete rights to remove Chris from office if he fails to comply, Matt told the Irish Star:
"I believe that this board would be well within our legal rights to vacate that office and remove him if he doesn't comply with the statute. Even if a response is provided, the board could still pursue a resolution of lack of confidence if they are dissatisfied with the answers."

The board's next meeting has been scheduled for April 21, 2026, where the future of Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos could be decided. Further, Matt explained that just submitting a response might not be enough. The answers should be satisfactory, and if the board felt he was wrong at any point, he would be facing no-confidence resolution. Therefore, Chris Nanos will either have to justify his record or resign from his role. In Matt's words:
"He has become a national and international embarrassment, and it has significantly tarnished his department unfairly. These people are doing their utmost every day to keep this community safe, and they have to report to a person who is just ethically and morally bankrupt and, frankly, embarrassingly disqualified to continue service in his post. Do the right thing and step aside."

Pima County Sheiff, Chris Nanos rose to attention with his regular press briefings over the high-profile Nancy Guthrie missing case. But the lack of breakthroughs over time has sparked criticism against him and the investigating department. At the same time, recent reports by The Arizona Republic highlighted discrepancies in his professional history, especially from his time at the El Paso Police Department. Those records suggest that complete information about his conduct in his role, including his disciplinary record, is not added to his professional profile. Chris is also facing allegations of misconduct, excessive force, and his past dismissal.

When asked about the same, the Sheriff's office defended the allegations. They explained that the missing details were due to minor, unintentional clerical errors. But the critics are not accepting the justification. The Pima County Supervisor countered the claim. He maintained that such issues in his past, spanning his decades-long career, cannot be dismissed as clerical errors. Moreover, the department has expressed concern that the legal battle, potential lawsuits, and investigations on Chris Nanos could cost in millions.

Moving aside his professional troubles, Chris Nanos' investigation of the Nancy Guthrie case has also drawn criticism. Despite more than two months of investigation, the Pima County Sheriff has been unable to make any breakthroughs, arrests, or identify any suspects in the case. Although the FBI found footage of a masked man near Nancy's home when she was possibly abducted, there has been no progress in the case. In fact, investigating thousands of tips, watching hours of surveillance footage, and even conducting large-scale forensic analysis have not yielded any major clues.

Therefore, officials are now questioning the speed, direction, evidence management and key decisions made by Chris Nanos in the case. Meanwhile, some former officials have also raised concerns about the Sheriff's resistance to pursuing alternative investigative routes. But Chris Nanos believes his team is moving in the right direction and making progress.
