Charlize Theron's father, Charles Jacobus Theron, according to a Hindustan Times report, was a South African construction worker who was staying with his family, reportedly on a farm located near Johannesburg. Charles Jacobus Theron was married to Gerda Maritz, and together they raised one child, Charlize. According to most social media accounts, the early life of Charles Jacobus Theron was rooted in a traditional Afrikaner family, and he comes from that background.

Although during the later years, Charlize Theron's father, Charles Jacobus Theron, had created a very unstable environment at the house. Well, he has not even been a public figure, but due to his alcoholic nature, and the circumstances of his demise Charles became very known in the media limelight.

Charlize Theron, in an interview with The New York Times, revealed that the night of June 21, 1991, had changed her and her mother's lives. This is because Charles Jacobus Theron had come home very intoxicated, and he had fired shots in the home and threatened to kill the actress and his wife. Charlize Theron revealed of seeing her father fight alcoholism and revealed how he used to go missing. In her words:

"He was a full-blown functioning drunk, but he had moments where he would go missing; we wouldn’t know where he was, and he would usually return in a state that was pretty severe. It would get messy and loud, and my mom’s not a wallflower either."

The report by The New York Times revealed that Charlize Theron was 12 or 13 years old when her mom was thinking about divorce for the very first time. For a very small thing, Charles became mad at his wife, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz, who had to protect herself. Charlize revealed that her father had fired shots through the steel doors to get inside. He had made it loud and clear that his plan was to kill his wife and daughter. Charles' brother was also present, and Charlize remembered:

"His brother was with him as well. We knew it was serious, and so by the time he broke into the first gate, my mom ran to the safe to get her gun. She came into my bedroom. The two of us were holding the door with our bodies because there wasn’t a lock on it. And he just stepped back and started shooting through the door. And this is the crazy thing: Not one bullet hit us. It’s insane when you think about it that way."

Charlize further revealed that the message of her father was very clear that he was all set to kill his family. He had challenged his family on the fact that he could break the door open and come inside with the shotgun. Charles' brother had gone to the safehouse, while her mom had pulled the door open while the brother was still standing there. Charlize revealed of how her dad met his end and said:

"The brother ran down the hallway, and she shot one bullet down the hallway that ricocheted seven times and shot him in the hand. It’s stuff you can’t explain. And then she followed my father, who was by then opening the safe to get more weapons out, and she shot him.”

Charlize had further revealed that she had to pee very badly, and so she had run inside the house to go to the toilet. He had found it to be very rude when she ran inside to use the toilet. Charlize had not stopped to say hello to everyone and remembered:

"Big thing in South Africa, the kind of respect that you have to have for elders. And he was in a state where he just spiraled. Like: ‘Why didn’t you stop? Who do you think you are?'”
