Catherine O’Hara and Bo Welch’s love story started at the time when they worked together on Tim Burton’s 1988 film, Beetlejuice. Bo was a production designer in the horror comedy at that time. Catherine and Bo became close friends. Back in 2024, Catherine told People magazine that she and Bo had many conversations on set and were laughing most of the time. Catherine revealed that they also used to go out together.

During her conversation with People magazine in 2024, Catherine O’Hara recalled that she was expecting Bo Welch to ask her out. However, Bo did not approach her in any manner, following which Catherine spoke with Tim Burton. Catherine told the director that Bo never asked her out, despite the fact that they were speaking frequently. Tim agreed to help Catherine and requested Bo Welch to take the actress on a date. Catherine recalled in her interview that Bo eventually approached her, asking her to join him by saying that his department was having a “swap meet.”

Tim Burton and Catherine O’Hara collaborated two years ago on a sequel to Beetlejuice, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The film was released in September 2024. Tim and Catherine appeared on the podcast, Wiser Than Me, a month after the film’s release in October. Catherine said during the interview that after her marriage to Bo Welch in 1992, Tim Burton surprised the pair with a private tour of the Vatican. Catherine said:

“Somebody had given the gift, and he’d been blown away, so he passed it on, which is really wonderful and generous. So this lovely priest or cardinal took us all around the Vatican, and he was wild.”

Bo Welch has directed a few films in his career over the years

Although Bo Welch is mostly known for his work as a production designer, he has also been active as a director. His credits include the UPN science-fiction series, Secret Agent Man, which premiered in 2000. He even directed five episodes of A Series of Unfortunate Events between 2017 and 2019. Furthermore, his first film as a director, The Cat in the Hat, released in 2003, turned out to be successful at the box office, despite receiving negative reactions.

Catherine O’Hara and Bo Welch’s first child, Matthew, was born in 1994, two years after the duo’s marriage. In 1997, the pair had another child named Luke.
