Longtime NFL reporter, Dianna Russini, has been under intense scrutiny by the public due to exclusive photos released by Page Six, which showed her alongside New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel. With speculation about the nature of their relationship ongoing, Dianna resigned from her role at The Athletic just a day ago, on April 14, 2026. Experts reveal if Dianna Russini can save her sports journalism career amid the affair buzz with Mike Vrabel 

The question that has been on most people's minds ever since Dianna Russini resigned from The Athletic is whether her sports journalism career can recover. This is especially the case since she has been in the industry for a long time. Well, according to Public Relations Specialist, Ryan McCormick, the answer to the question is “Potentially.” While speaking with Page Six, he said that the problem is that Dianna must step away to allow the controversy to cool down and of course, for the public interest in the matter to wane. He believes that Dianna should only return to the spotlight when she is in control of her narrative. 

If Ryan had to give advice to Dianna, he said that it would be that she should start her own podcast or streaming channel. Since Dianna already has a captive audience, with 425k followers on X (formerly Twitter) and 201k on Instagram, this program could take off quickly. He added:

“I don't think Ms. Russini will return to a mainstream media outlet for the foreseeable future, but it could happen one day.” 

Chrissy Bernel, whom you might recognise as the founder and CEO of Be a Better Brand, agreed that Dianna's career definitely “isn't over.” According to her, the sportscaster's current priority should be “rebuilding trust” with her audience because credibility is one of Dianna's most important brand assets. Chrissy explained:

“She should step away briefly to gain clarity on what she can truthfully address, and then re-enter a lane where trust can be rebuilt over time. Perhaps her own platform, where she controls the framing, such as a podcast, Substack or long-form/in-depth reporting, can reestablish her authority and trust in the space.”

Public relations expert, Stephanie Alston mimicked similar sentiments. She told the outlet that Dianna's career is “not automatically over” and that she needs to focus on “credibility.” According to her, the main issue is not Dianna's alleged affair scandal itself, but instead whether sources and future employers still believe she can operate with “trust and professionalism.”

Stephanie claimed that the biggest mistake public figures usually make after a scandal is treating recovery like a quick PR stunt. She said, “Career recovery is about behaviour, patience, and credibility.” Stephanie believes that the public may forgive, but her employers and audiences still need to see a pattern of steadiness “before they fully buy back in and forgive.”

As we have reported earlier, Dianna announced that she would leave her job at The Athletic by sending a letter to the executive editor, Steven Ginsberg. According to the Associated Press, which obtained the sports reporter's letter, Dianna wrote that she has covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout her career. She said that when the Page Six photos were first published, The Athletic had supported her unequivocally and expressed confidence in her work. However, as the situation continues to escalate, fuelled by repeated leaks, she has no interest in submitting to a public inquiry. Dianna stated:

“Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now — before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”
