'Calabasas Confidential' Review, New Gen Z Reality Gamble Is Full Of Drama, Gossips And Betrayal

Calabasas is not a place that needs an introduction; it's the home of many reality TV series and the home ground of The Kardashians. Their fame is what introduced the world to the city's luxurious homes, shopping centres, and influencers' lifestyle, and now, taking it a step further is the new Netflix series, Calabasas Confidential. However, will the show become the youth's "IT" show? Let's find out.

Calabasas Confidential debuts a fresh ensemble with much room to grow

The show centres around a group of young adults returning to their hometown after being away for college: what could go wrong? Well, a lot apparently, as they reignite old flames and resentments. However, what doesn't sit well with the audience is that, unlike family- or workplace-based reality shows, the stars of Calabasas Confidential don't feel "organically bound together", which makes the audience question whether they really spend time together apart from their on-screen appearance. Well, unless some genuine bonds are in store, the show might feel a little forced, making it look less authentic.

An emotional standout moment between Jemma and her ex-boyfriend, Dylan

While there are many arcs in Calabasas Confidential, so far, fans have found only one authentic ground: Jemma's anger towards her ex-boyfriend, Dylan. While she is not the child of a famous person or a well-known influencer herself, her feelings for the person she calls "Douchebag Dylan" are as real as they come. However, things get even more chaotic when Dylan begins dating Jemma's close friend around the season's halfway point, making the betrayal even more apparent and providing some of the momentum that was previously missing.

A diverse cast that might actually be a little too much

Apart from Dylan and Jemma, Calabasas Confidential features a whopping 14 cast members. However, it seems like it will take the audience a while to remember who's who. However, there are some well-known faces in the group too. From Suede with a rumoured dating era with Drake to the son of rapper, Master P, Hercy, we hope that it won't be long before the Calabasas Confidential cast is a core part of Gen Z's binge watch. Nonetheless, that moment is a little too far-fetched right now. 

While we are loving the new faces, many of them are new to the audience, making it slightly confusing for the audience to remember. While some really capture the audience's attentions other immediately feel interchangeable. Another factor that seems to have rubbed the audience the wrong way is the cast's constant complaints about petty fights and immature behaviour being "so high school", which is rich, since they are a group of high school acquaintances coming back together.

Calabasas Confidential is "inspired" by reality-TV classics 

The show might be meant for young adults, but it follows the same rich lineage of LA-based reality shows like The Kardashians, Selling Sunset, and The Hills. While it's too soon to say whether it will become the binge show for the new generation, it is building its identity, which could honestly go either way. For now, all we can say is that Calabasas Confidential brings a new essence to the reality show for young adults, introducing a cast and problems that might be a little more relatable to them. Nonetheless, for now, it's safe to say that the viewers are continuing to wait for something to make them a Calabasas Confidential addict.

The final verdict on Calabasas Confidential

Calabasas Confidential, at its very core, is like watching a franchise film from the middle: they talk about grudges and loyalties, but neither is something the audience can currently connect with, since most of it happened years before they started filming. However, the cast dynamics are still developing, which means there is still room for the viewers to grow attached as the series continues.
