Brazil Bungee Jump Tragedy, Maria Eduarda's Death Triggers Identity Mix Up, 'Gone To My Family..'

A 21-year-old fitness enthusiast and student from Brazil, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, passed away following a fatal accident during an adventure sport. For the unversed, Maria passed away after the crew at a rope-jumping activity in Brazil's Sao Paulo state forgot to attach the rope. Amid that, the deceased's last Instagram story has gone viral. However, while the Instagram account mentioned in the posts appears to have been deactivated, two influencers who share the victim's name became targets of online confusion and harassment, prompting them to set the record straight.

What happened to Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas?

The unfortunate accident occurred on June 13, 2026, at Limeira's Skeleton Bridge, where she wanted to bungee jump. For the unversed, in this extreme sport, a person makes a pendulum while attached to safety ropes and climbing equipment. However, according to reports and statements from the Military Police, a serious mistake occurred during Maria's turn. Witnesses revealed that the team present at the scene didn't attach Maria to the main rope line before she was hastily launched from the platform. 

An influencer sharing the same name issued a clarification after she was flooded with messages from people who believed she was the victim

The accident has left everyone shocked, with many expressing their anger towards the ignorance of the instructors present at the scene. While authorities are looking into the matter, social media has been rife with the news of Maria's death and the story she posted on her Instagram handle before her passing. Amid that, netizens have been searching online for the account to express their condolences. However, it seemed that many had reached the wrong page, prompting the influencer who shared the victim's name to issue a clarification.

Influencer and model, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues, took to her Instagram account to share a statement clarifying the misinformation that she was the victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas. In a lengthy statement, her team clarified:

"Due to the news circulating regarding the tragic incident recently reported in Limeira involving a young woman named Maria Eduarda, we would like to clarify that this is not the content creator. At this moment of profound sorrow, we extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends, and we pray that God may comfort their hearts and grant them strength during this difficult time. We kindly ask everyone to refrain from spreading inaccurate information and to respect this sensitive moment."

However, she was not the only one who had fallen victim to the identity crisis. In the age of social media, it has become vastly difficult not to be confused. Another influencer, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues, took to her social media account and shared a report on the accident in response to spam from social media users. She shared the screengrab of the report and captioned it:

"According to the delegate, the two men... The girl who died is not me, stop killing me and commenting on my photos, they've even gone to my family's profile. STOP!!!"

Maria shared another post confirming that her name is Maria Eduarda Rodrigues Dos Santos Silva, and she is 22 years old. The influencer acknowledged how common her name was, but also expressed her shock that her page had surpassed 90 million views in a couple of hours, as people mistook her identity. She further added:

"It's amazing how tragedy sparks more curiosity than empathy. They are associating me with something unrelated to me, which has generated unnecessary comments and judgments. Behind each profile there is a person, with feelings and a story, may we have more responsibility before spreading information and more humanity when dealing with the pain of others. MY CONDOLENCES TO THE GIRL'S FAMILY!!"
