Well, the much-awaited reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has officially been cancelled. Recently, actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed the sad news. Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms that Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is cancelled

Recently, the much loved actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar took to her Instagram handle to share a video, in which she confirmed that the reboot version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has officially been cancelled. The actress explained that she wanted her fans to know the sad news from her. It is worth mentioning that Sarah did not reveal the reason behind why it is cancelled. She was quoted as saying:

"So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale. I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn't change any of that. And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me."

Moments after Sarah’s Instagram video went viral, Buffy fans flooded the comments section. Users in the comment section seemed devastated by the sad news and demanded the makers to resume the shoot of Buffy: New Sunnydale reboot. One fan commented, "This is the most disappointing entertainment news of the year. We love you and will follow you anywhere." Another user wrote, "This is really upsetting to hear but I’m very confident that Buffy is out there living her best life!" 

When Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed her excitement on the project

Nearly a year before this sad news, in 2025, Sarah Michelle Gellar sat down for a conversation with People Magazine, during which she explained that she was excited to work on the project, Buffy: New Sunnydale. She revealed that she had not expected Chloe Zhao to call her and ask to partner with her. In her words:

"There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me, and ask my advice on things and my opinion — especially because she hasn't done television. She'll call me, and she'll say, 'Well, I have to defer to you,' and I'm like, 'Wait, what?' Those aren't words I ever thought I would hear."

What was the expected plot of Buffy: New Sunnydale?

The now cancelled reboot, Buffy: New Sunnydale was expected to expand the universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Apart from retelling the story, the reboot version was expected to focus on a new slayer. It would have also featured other threats. In the reboot, Sarah would have been the executive producer alongside director, Chloe Zhao.

While the official reasons for the cancellation have not been revealed by the makers or by the streaming platform, Hulu, some reports claim that development issues might be the main reason behind the tough decision. Multiple projects are also cancelled due to budget issues and creative problems. While the reboot is cancelled, the original series is streaming on Hulu. For the unversed, the Buffy series went on for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003.
