Amid health issues and the heartbreak of losing his better half, Billy embarked on his journey to the afterlife. Here's everything we know about his family.

Meet Billy Boston's wife, Lady Joan Boston, all about their kids and family

Sir Billy Boston was a legendary figure in the field of rugby, with a career spanning 17 years. His death sparked an interest in his lesser-known family life, particularly his wife, Lady Joan Boston. Billy was married to Joan for seven long decades, which in itself is a remarkable feat. It shows their love and dedication for each other, which led them to stay together until they took their last breaths. Lady Joan reportedly passed away just a month before Billy.

Lady Joan passed away at the age of 90 on July 23, 2026, leaving her ailing better half heartbroken. Now, his fans hope that he rests in peace and is reunited with his lady love in heaven. The late rugby star's better half largely stayed out of the public eye and avoided the intense online scrutiny that comes from being a family member of a sports icon. While they maintained a private life, glimpses of their relationship emerged through reports regarding her support for his career.

Sir Billy Boston's spouse was widely regarded as his pillar of support throughout his historic sporting career. After Lady Joan passed away, Billy's former rugby club, the Wigan Warriors, paid a tribute to her. They held a special one-minute silence to honor the deceased's lifelong loyalty and dedication towards her husband's work and her involvement in the rugby league community.

As for Sir Billy Boston and Lady Joan's family life, nothing much is known except that they shared an enduring 70-year marriage and raised a large family, including children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Billy and Joan were parents to five kids, including their son, Stephen Boston and four daughters, Karen Murray, Christine Davies, Lisa Parr and Angela Dainty.

When Billy received his knighthood from King Charles III, three of his kids accompanied him to Buckingham Palace. As for the other two (Lisa and Angela), they couldn't be there by their father's side on his special day, as they passed away before him. Neither their nor their mom's cause of death is publicly known. Regarding their dad, Billy's death reports hint at a prolonged illness.

What was Billy Boston's cause of death?

Sir Billy Boston passed away peacefully in his sleep overnight in hospital on August 24, 2026. The exact cause of death of the Rugby League legend was not detailed in the official statement from his former club, Wigan Warriors. However, as per reports, the 92-year-old had been living with vascular dementia for about a decade since his diagnosis in 2016.

Billy's demise might have been caused by health complications stemming from dementia. However, there is no confirmation regarding the same. His death sparked an outpouring of condolences from ex-players and current players of Billy's former team, as well as from politicians and other influential figures. UK's Prime Minister Andy Burnham took to X (formerly Twitter), recalled the "kindest" rugby league legend, and wrote:

"Heartbroken to hear my friend Sir Billy Boston has died. Billy was one of the greatest rugby league players of all time but also one of the kindest and most down-to-earth people you could ever wish to meet."

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Billy Boston's family as they deal with his loss.
