Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleMalayalam romantic comedy-drama Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has finally made its way to the OTT platform. The film was released on JioHotstar on October 2, 2026. So, if you are planning to watch the movie weekend, here's what you need to know about 'Justin' and 'Ashley's' love story.
What is Bethlehem Kudumba Unit about?
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit follows an unusual relationship with a large age gap and asks whether two people should be allowed to choose their own future despite opposition from their families. The story centres around 'Justin' and 'Ashley' and how, despite the odds and reasons why they should not fall for each other, they become emotionally attached.
The film begins with 'Ashley' on the final day of school, already setting an emotional note as she is extremely close with her classmates. They gift her a guitar as a farewell present because she loves music. On the family side, she lives with her mother, father and brother. Her mother supports the family, while her father is an alcoholic who even sees 'Ashley's' belongings as a means to get more liquor.

Once 'Ashley' moves to the new city, we are introduced to 'Justin', her neighbour. He is a kindhearted man who is physically incapable of avoiding people and often gets engrossed in their problems. He also manages canteens at schools and colleges, and supports his brother, who keeps draining money to fulfil his dream of becoming a filmmaker.
While 'Justin' complains about his brother's spending, he always backs him. Things between 'Ashley' and 'Justin' bloom after she ends up at a college where the latter runs a canteen. While initially she is just curious, her admiration starts to grow as she learns how nice he is. Eventually, she gets his number from a guy named 'Lucas', who is in love with her. 'Ashley' and 'Justin' begin chatting, and the former falls for him.
'Justin' is initially clueless about 'Ashley's' feelings and only sees her as someone who enjoys talking to him. However, things become clearer when she gets jealous after another woman gets close to him. The woman points 'Ashley's' reaction to 'Justin', but he is shocked as he says they have a massive age gap for anything to happen between them.
While the story doesn't clarify their age, 'Justin' is supposedly above 35 years old, whereas 'Ashley' is said to be a legal teenager (18+). 'Ashley' eventually stops hiding how she feels, but 'Justin' refuses her advances despite her attempts, leaving her heartbroken. Things change during the Onam celebration when 'Ashley' disappears before a crucial dance performance.
'Justin' goes to search for her and finds her. 'Ashley' still insists that her feelings are genuine and, despite 'Justin's' reasoning, refuses to let go. He eventually understands how invested 'Ashley' has become in him and gives their relationship a chance, talking and meeting with her more often. And as fate would have it. He falls for her. While it looked like things were going fine, things take a turn when the neighbourhood goes on a trip.
'Ashley' and 'Justin' try to keep their distance but are eventually caught by her uncle; upon return, he shows 'Ashley's' mother a picture of the two, and everything unravels. 'Ashley's' mother furiously confronts them both and 'Justin's' family. She announces that she will take her daughter away, and leaves. 'Justin' is left shattered by this, because he had been through something similar in the past as well.
He had thought he'd never open his heart to anyone, but 'Ashley' had changed that, and now she was gone too. After a long separation, 'Ashley' comes back for 'Justin's' brother's wedding. While he tries to avoid her, 'Ashley' becomes overwhelmed because she had come back just to talk to him.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit ending explained
Seeing 'Ashley' break down, 'Justin' changes his approach and confesses his feelings. However, there's still one hurdle in their love story: 'Ashley's' mother, who still won't accept the age gap between them. Despite repeated attempts, 'Ashely's' mother refuses to accept their romance. She even questions her daughter, reminding her how she had promised her mother that she would forget 'Justin'.
'Justin' then argues that 'Ashley' should be allowed to decide what she wants from her own life. The latter supports him and clearly states that she wants to build a life with him. While the mother still refuses, the film finally brings someone no one expected: 'Ashley's' father.
Throughout most of the Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, 'Ashley's' father is portrayed as irresponsible, a heavy drinker and contributes very little to his family's problems. However, his involvement becomes important in the climax, and for the first time he seriously considers what his daughter wants.

He reminds his wife that 'Ashley' has spent years dealing with difficulties created by her own family. Despite everything, she rarely demanded anything for herself. However, for the first time, she was now asking for something. The father argues that, as parents, they should consider her happiness. This becomes the biggest transformation given to 'Ashley's' father. The man who spent most of the story failing his family becomes the person who finally stands beside his daughter when she needs support.
With 'Ashley's' father's support, they finally break the deadlock, and she and 'Justin' are allowed to move forward. The film ends with the two happy and preparing to begin a new chapter of their lives. Rather than ending with another separation, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit resolves its central conflict through acceptance. The ending centres on personal choices, parental expectations, and second chances.
'Justin' has already experienced heartbreak and appears to have accepted a lonely future before 'Ashley' enters his life. On the other hand, 'Ashley' refuses to let others decide whether social expectations and age differences should automatically decide two people's future. Nonetheless, the most satisfying character development comes from 'Ashley's' father. While he doesn't solve everything himself, he recognises that his daughter has spent much of her life accepting decisions made by other people.
