After walking out on an alcoholic husband with two teen sons, Chris Anne's life was defined by a lifelong commitment to education and activism while ensuring a flourishing life for Ben and Casey.
Chris Anne married Timothy Byers Affleck in 1971 and separated after more than a decade together. The divorce was largely attributed to Timothy's struggle with alcoholism, which had made family life increasingly unstable.
When the couple split, Ben was 12, and his brother, Casey, was just 9. After the separation, Timothy moved to California, leaving Chris Anne to raise both boys alone in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Despite the emotional and financial challenges, the brothers have repeatedly credited their mother with creating a stable, loving home during one of the most turbulent periods of their childhood.
Born in New York City in 1942, Chris Anne Boldt graduated from Harvard University and spent 35 years as a public school teacher. Even after retiring in 2008, she remained deeply committed to social justice and civil rights causes.
Growing up, television time was limited in the Affleck household. Rather, Ben and Casey were encouraged to read books, attend local theater productions, and create their own stories.
Home became the place where the Affleck siblings' knowledge flourished through debate, curiosity, and imagination. Chris Anne regularly took both boys to theater performances, exposing them to the arts at an early age. As they grew up, the brothers became very interested in drama, storytelling, and theatricals. That shared creative upbringing eventually led both Ben and Casey to successful acting careers and to collaborate on acclaimed films including Good Will Hunting and Gone Baby Gone.
Chris Anne has always been there for her boys in their biggest moments. No matter how famous her sons became, she kept them grounded with her values while remaining their biggest supporter. One of the most memorable examples came at the 1998 Academy Awards, when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won the Oscar for Good Will Hunting.
Rather than bringing celebrity guests, Ben proudly chose his mother as his date. Reflecting on the night years later, he said he never understood why anyone found that surprising. Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor recalled the moment:
“We were sitting next to our moms, and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms. I remember how everyone had made such a big thing out of it ... I remember thinking... ‘Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?’ Who else do you think we would bring?”
While Ben and Casey Affleck became household names through films like Good Will Hunting, Argo and Manchester by the Sea, their mother's legacy was defined by education, activism and unwavering devotion to her family.
The Affleck family announced that Chris Anne passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 2, 2026, with the news later shared in an obituary published in The Boston Globe. Her obituary remembers a woman who spent decades advocating for equality, encouraging young people to challenge authority, and continuing to support causes she believed in well into retirement.
After her cancer diagnosis in December 2025, Chris Anne was given six months to live, and her last wish was to see her grandson graduate from high school. Surrounded by Ben, Casey, and her loved ones, she fulfilled that wish on May 31, 2026. Her obituary noted:
"Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school. She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later."
Chris Anne left in peace, leaving behind not only two Oscar-winning sons, but a legacy of resilience, compassion, and unconditional love.
