Throughout his 11-year NHL career, Barry Melrose played 335 games as a defenseman from 1979 to 1986 with teams like the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings. Even before that, he was with Cincinnati in the WHA from 1976 to 1979, as reported by ESPN. The cause of Barry Melrose's passing hasn't been revealed.
Speaking about his personal life, Barry was from rural Kelvington, Saskatchewan. If public information is to be believed, Barry formed a liking for ice hockey at an early age. He reportedly played the sport with friends during his childhood, and over time his love for the sport intensified, and his skills improved, eventually bringing him into the limelight.
The former NHL player was married to his wife, Cindy Melrose. Few details about Barry's personal life are known because he kept it private. However, reports say Barry married Cindy in 1978, and she has always been his biggest cheerleader and supporter.
The couple welcomed two kids, Tyrell and Adrien. Despite his demanding career, Barry Melrose reportedly always made time for his family, and even allegedly said in an interview that he liked spending quality time with them.
It was in 2023 when Barry stepped away from ESPN after more than 25 years as an analyst there. The reason was said to be his Parkinson's disease. While announcing that he would step away from ESPN, Barry credited his wife, Cindy, for being there by his side, calling her supportive. He, in the statement, said:
“I’ve had over 50 extraordinary years playing, coaching and analyzing the world’s greatest game, hockey. It’s now time to hang up my skates and focus on my health, my family, including my supportive wife Cindy, and whatever comes next.”
Barry Melrose's career as a coach and analyst
After retiring from the NHL, Barry Melrose began his journey as a coach in 1987. During his career as a coach, he worked with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Seattle Thunderbirds, and the Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League.
In 1987, he led the Medicine Hat Tigers to the WHL's Memorial Cup title, and in 1991, under his coaching, the Adirondack Red Wings won the Calder Cup Championship. In 1992, he was hired by the Kings, and he coached Wayne Gretzky, eventually leading the team to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final.
The Kings lost to the Montreal Canadiens; however, Barry coached the team for a few more years till 1995, as reported. In 1996, he joined ESPN as an analyst and was there for over 25 years. In 2023, he announced that he would step away from his position, and his longtime broadcast partner, John Buccigross, later revealed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. It couldn't be determined whether he passed away after his battle with Parkinson's disease, as the official cause of his death hasn't been disclosed.
