Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle rose to fame at the same time and who sang better than who is extremely hard to tell. Many reports still exist which suggests that Lata ji and Asha ji once considered each other rivals but the sister duo has always refuted such rumours. The both of them have deep regards for one another and a glimpse of the same was seen in the beautiful birthday wish that Lata ji had written for her little sister, Asha ji on her 86th birthday on September 08, 2019. Posting a throwback black and white picture with one another, Lata ji had written, “Namaskar. Aaj meri choti behen Asha Bhosle ka Janamdin hai. Main usko aashirwad deti hun ki wo hamesha swasth rahe aur khush rahe. @asha.bhosle #ashabosle.” Replying to which, Asha ji had commented, “Namaskar didi. thank you.”
And today, on September 28, 2019, legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar turned 90 years old and for the same, her choti behen, Asha Bhonsle took to Instagram and posting two nostalgic black and white pictures with one another, wrote, “Aaj meri badi behen, @mangeshkar.lata ka janamdin hai! Vo 90 baras ki hui hai! Aap sabko maloom hai ki vo Bharat ki shaan hai. Janamdin ki shubhkamnayein.” Not just this, Asha ji also treated her fans by posting an adorable picture from Lata ji’s cake-cutting ceremony, wherein they are seen trying to capture an image of the birthday cake. Like we mentioned before, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle were once known to be each other’s arch-rivals. Revealing the truth about the same in a 2016 interview with the HT, Lata ji had shared, “This talk of our differences has been blown out of all proportions over the years. We are sisters first and foremost, and forever. We were never rivals as singers. What Asha can do before the mike I can never do. I can never sing Piya tu ab to aaja or Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko the way she can. My point is, we had our own individual space as singers. Why would we be seen as rivals? Lata Mangeshkar had further talked about her sister, Asha Bhonsle and had stated, “People say all kinds of things about our relationship. There’s no fight between us. Until some years back we lived in adjoining flats and there was a connecting door between our homes. We were constantly in and out of one another’s homes. At a tender age Asha left home and got married. And she made a big name for herself. I’m very proud of her. We share a very healthy relationship. There is no stress. Whenever Asha has a show, she seeks my blessings first. I’ve heard her lyric-book has my picture in it. My relationship with none of my siblings is troubled. I fulfil the function of the eldest with all my siblings. I am fortunate to have such siblings.”
Lata Mangeshkar was also asked if her equally talented siblings did not get the rightful amount of acknowledgement due to her popularity, “I disagree with that. Today in Maharashtra it’s not just me who’s recognised. We are known collectively as the Mangeshkar family. And it was then when Lata Mangeshkar had rated her younger sister, Asha Bhonsle as a singer. She had stated, “She didn’t become famous for nothing. She can sing every kind of song. Thank God she didn’t adopt my style of singing. If she had we’d have become competition for one another. She went on her own path. Yeh manna padega ki woh bahut badi gayika hai.”
