Filmmaker, James Cameron's most-awaited film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has finally hit theatres on December 19, 2025. Given the success that the film has seen only within a few days of its release, James Cameron has been interviewed by a number of publications about his recent movie. In one such interview, the topic shifted quickly from Avatar: Fire and Ash to how actress and comedian, Amy Poehler once made a joke at his expense at the 2013 Golden Globes Awards.
According to a report by Variety, during this award show, James's ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, was a best director nominee thanks to her film, Zero Dark Thirty. As Amy Poehler made a joke about their marriage, James revealed that he felt like it was nothing more than an ‘ignorant dig' towards them. Following this revelation, fans have started to wonder about Amy Poehler's relationship with Will Arnett, since her marriage also ended in failure. If you are one of them, here's their complete relationship timeline.

Will Arnett saw the woman who was about to become his future wife back in 1996 when Amy Poehler was still working and performing with the improv troupe, Upright Citizens Brigade. For those unaware, Amy was also the one who helped found the troupe, which was performing at a theatre in New York City at the time. According to reports, Will went to watch them perform with his then-girlfriend; however, it did not stop him from falling in love with Amy at first glance. In an interview with People in 2005, Will revealed, “I went with my then-girlfriend, and she was like, ‘You have a crush on that girl!’” He also shared that his first impression of Amy was that she “was fantastic and obviously really cute.”

If reports are to be believed, Amy and Will were introduced to each other by their mutual friends. Soon after getting to know one another, they officially started dating and entered a full-blown relationship by late 2000. Two years later, in May 2002, they made their relationship public by attending the premiere of the film, Insomania, at the Tribeca Arts Center.

After three years of dating, Amy and Will took their wedding vows in 2003. Their wedding did not stop the two on their work fronts. This is because only 3 months later, Will's now-hit show, Arrested Development, premiered on Fox. A year later, his wife, Amy, also joined him on the show and not just as any character but as the seal-hunting wife of his character, ‘G.O.B.’ The duo shared the screen together for five episodes of the first two seasons.

Fast-forward to April 2008: the couple shared a wonderful piece of news with their fans. They announced that they were expecting their first child, but wanted to keep their baby's sex a surprise until the delivery. A couple of months later, Amy revealed in an interview that she has “been very lucky” with her first pregnancy. She also added that she is “feeling good” and “overwhelmed with blessings.”

In October 2008, news broke that the actor duo had welcomed their first child together, a son named Archibald “Archie” William Emerson. At the time, a representative on Amy's end shared that the family of three was “all healthy and resting comfortably.” As per reports, baby Archie was born in New York City, weighing a good 8 lbs, 1 oz. Amy's then co-anchor on SNL, Seth Meyers, was one of the first people to announce the happy news with viewers during their Weekend Update segment, stating:
“Amy Poehler is not here tonight because she is having a baby.”
Amy and Will Arnett became proud parents once again in 2010, two years after their first child, Archie was born. Adding to their family of three, the duo welcomed a son together, whom they named Abel James Arnett. Arnett was born on August 6, 2010, weighing 7 lbs and 13 oz. Amy's representative updated everyone on the family's status, saying:
“Amy, Will, Abel, and Archie are all healthy and resting comfortably.”

To everyone's surprise, the once-power couple of Hollywood split from each other after nine years of marriage. Although we do not know the exact date, reports indicate that Amy and Will separated in early 2012. At the time, neither Amy nor Will gave out a public statement regarding their split, however, both the actors' representatives confirmed that they had already decided to part ways.

Although Amy and Will separated in 2012, they did not divorce until two years later. In 2014, it was Will who filed for divorce first from his then-wife. Thankfully, however, he was willing to co-parent his sons with Amy. This is why he requested joint legal and physical custody of both Archie and Abel, along with visitation rights. According to CBS News, the former couple's divorce was finalised in August 2016, nearly four years after they decided to split.
