Amitabh Bachchan is one of the living legends in the Indian film industry, and he continues to shine bright through his prospering career, even at the age of 80. The actor, who made his debut with the 1969-released film, Saat Hindustani hasn’t ever looked back in his career since, and over the years, has ventured into different newer kinds of projects, including the television and OTT platforms. And now, during a candid revelation, Big B reminisced memories of his first salary.
During a recent episode of his quiz-based show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan spoke about his debut film, Saat Hindustani. Reminiscing his memories from the same, Big B recalled the first salary that he received for the film, and mentioned that he wanted to give it to his parents, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan straightaway, as he wanted to take up their responsibilities and do something special for them. In his words:
“Humko ye laga ki isase hume jo bhi milega, wo hum apne ma-babuji ko de dein. Mujhe ek zariya mil gaya ki apne ma-babuji ko bula kar apne paas rakhein. Jo zimmedari unhone humare liye jeevan bhar kiya hai us zimmedari ko hum apne kandho par rakh kar aage unke liye kar ke dein.”
In yet one of his previous episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Big B had shared an unheard anecdote from his parents’ life, and had spoken about their inter-caste marriage. He revealed that while his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan belonged to a Hindu family, his mother, Teji Bachchan came from a Sikh family. Recalling how their marriage faced a lot of backlash and criticisms back then, Big B said:
“I am getting a little hesitant to say this but she was also a big fan of my babuji (Harivansh Rai Bachchan). My babuji had done an inter-caste marriage. My mataji (Teji Bachchan) was from a sikh family and when we lived in Allahabad, over there getting married in different caste was called a sin during that time."
In the same episode, Big B also revealed how eminent political leader, Sarojini Naidu consoled his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan over the constant backlash and taunts he received for tying the knot with a woman from a different caste. The actor also mentioned that it was Sarojini Naidu who introduced his father to Jawaharlal Nehru, who lived in Allahabad back then.
Back in January 2023, Amitabh Bachchan had delivered a speech at the Joy Awards, where he was felicitated. During his speech, Big B recalled an anecdote about his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and revealed that the latter used to watch a lot of Hindi films during his last days. Elaborating more, Amitabh Bachchan had said:
“My father, a great poet - during the last days of his life, he used to watch a Hindi film every evening, sometimes repeating the same film every time. I asked him what is it that you find interesting in the cinema. He said that I get poetic justice in three hours. You and I won’t get poetic justice in a lifetime or several lifetimes. That’s the power of cinema."
