'American Idol', Who Is Jake Thistle? Meet Eliminated Contestant's Family As Show Reveals Top 11

American Idol is a long-running reality singing competition that aims to find the country's next music superstar from unsigned talent. Spanning 24 seasons, the show has established itself as one of the most prestigious music reality programmes worldwide. As for the latest update of the ongoing season, the April 6, 2026 (ET) episode revealed the show's Top 11 following the Judges' Song Contest night. This episode saw one of the beloved contestants, Jake Thistle bid goodbye to the show, after being eliminated from Top 14 alongwith Julián Kalel. Here's everything we know about Jake's music journey and family.

Who is Jake Thistle?

Jake Thistle is a rising singer-songwriter and musician from Paramus, New Jersey, who gained national recognition as a contestant on the 2026 season of American Idol. Known for his raspy, soulful vocals, he has been compared to renowned artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams. His music is rooted in classic rock and folk-driven indie rock. He gained widespread fame after appearing on American Idol Season 24 and advancing to the Top 14. The 22-year-old Rutgers graduate was even one of the show's fan favourites, whom the media considered a top contender to reach the final stages of the music reality show.

However, Jake got eliminated before the show got its Top 12. His elimination from the show on April 6, 2026, sparked significant frustration among his fanbase, primarily due to a voting system crash that occurred during the previous week's broadcast. Some fans even felt that the live dismissal as awkward and disrespectful, noting that eliminated contestants were rushed off stage with very less screen time.

Talking about his journey on American Idol, Jake impressed judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood with performances of Can't Find My Way Home (by Blind Faith), The Power of Love (by Huey Lewis & The News), and his self-composed song, Sleep On Me. Besides his latest album, Sleep On Me, released in February 2026, Jake Thistle also dropped several other independent projects, including his debut LP, Down the Line (2020), recorded in his bedroom during the pandemic, and the EP, The Half Left Out (2023). Before his television debut on American Idol, Jake was reportedly a regular performer in the Asbury Park music scene, frequently playing at the historic Stone Pony.

Jake Thistle's interest in music began after watching Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform at the 2008 Super Bowl Halftime Show. He was only three years old at that time and recalled the incident in his 20s during an interview with New Jersey Monthly Music. Jake has described the experience as a "formative moment" that left him mesmerised and "obsessed" with music. Following the Super Bowl, he used YouTube to find more of Tom Petty's music. The platform's algorithm eventually introduced him to other classic rock icons like The Beatles, Eric Clapton, and John Hiatt.

At age nine, a family friend gifted Jake a guitar, and he taught himself to play by watching videos of Tom Petty and began writing his first songs before he turned ten. Around that time, he began performing live and fell in love with music even more. After years of singing and songwriting, American Idol gave him a platform to reach a wider audience. Sharing his excitement to be a part of the show, he said:

"I'm super excited about being on the show and getting to reach a bigger audience. I've been songwriting for so long, but my favourite thing is to play for an audience. I'm definitely hopeful, but I really want to have fun and be as authentic as I can be."
