Alyssa Farah Griffin compared raising a puppy to being a mom of a newborn human baby, said she would breastfeed her pet if needed
Alyssa Farah sparked an online debate with a controversial statement during the October 2026 episode of The View. At one point, Alyssa said that she would breastfeed her dog, Herbie, if needed. The subject came up during one of the show's 'Hot Topic' conversations about a woman who asked for eight weeks of paid maternity leave to adopt a dog. Netizens were stunned to hear both the woman's and Alyssa's remarks.
Many pet lovers could relate to the feelings, while others disliked the comparison of animals to human babies. Alyssa said that paid family leave was needed for every parent, regardless of their background and regardless of whether they were a human or pet parent. It showcased her willingness to go to great lengths to take care of her furry friend. In her words:
"Until we have paid family leave in this country for every parent, every type of family, this is not a discussion to have...Caveat, I do believe in bereavement leave for pets."

Amid Alyssa and the woman's conversation, moderator Whoopi Goldberg]y jumped in to advise that the young woman who requested maternity leave to raise a puppy not "compare it" to raising a child, "because you're not breastfeeding your dog" like you would a human baby. Refuting Whoopi, Alyssa Farah Griffin said that she would take that step as well if necessary. "I would've if he needed it," she claimed.
The new mom, who gave birth to her son Justin Griffin Jr in February 2026, explained that "being a pet parent to Herbie" helped "prepare me for motherhood" in ways she didn't expect. Alyssa shared that it she got prepared to become a hands-on mother to Justin Jr because of her motherhood practice with her other child, her pet. To her, both her kid and her furry friend are equally important. Calling childcare "exhausting", she stated:
"Every two hours he was up, they have to go to the bathroom all the time, they get sick, they're like all over the place. It's great prep and it is exhausting."
