Alysa Liu is currently the top American contender at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina in the Women's single figure skating event. Having already won a gold medal in the team event on February 8, 2026, she is now the highest-ranking American woman in the individual competition. Following the women's short program on February 17, 2026, Alysa is in third place with a score of 76.59, trailing the leader, Japan's Ami Nakai, by just 2.12 points. As the USA cheers on their medal hope, here's a look at her life, career, comeback from retirement and relationship status.

Alysa Liu's much-anticipated comeback at the Olympics has brought the focus on relationship status once again. The 20-year-old has largely kept her personal life out of the spotlight, with no publicly available information on any current or past confirmed or rumoured boyfriends. As of February 2026, Alysa Liu is not dating anybody. In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the figure skater opened up about her decision to remain single to focus entirely on her career.
Alysa mentioned she envisions herself staying single for a long time, prioritising her friendships and self-love over romantic relationships. She attributed her decision to a hectic training schedule for the 2026 Winter Olympics and a high set of personal standards. Any sport demands total focus and dedication, and figure skating is particularly physically demanding, making it hard for someone like Alysa Liu to find the free time for dating. Mentioning that she loves her single life, she told Cosmopolitan:
"I loves being single. I really do. I see myself being single for a long time. Especially right now, I choose friendships over relationships any day."

Alysa feels that her busy schedule would cause a hindrance in her love life if she chose to date someone, as both she and her partner would have to make "a ton of sacrifices". According to her, it is not worth trying so hard to be in a relationship amid such professional pressures. She is also happy with how her life is currently, with many "amazing people" around who love her. It makes her not want to look for love elsewhere. Additionally, the American figure skater revealed that she has high standards when it comes to a partner, making it even harder to date somebody. She stated:
"I have so much love in my life already, and I have so many amazing people, I just haven't felt the need to look for more or look elsewhere. I really love myself, and my standards are quite high, too. My schedule, especially since starting to skate again, is pretty hectic. If I were to date someone, we'd each have to make a ton of sacrifices. It's just not worth it at this point to build something."

Alysa Liu retired in April 2022 at age 16, primarily because she felt she had achieved her competitive goals and wanted to lead a more normal life outside the sport. Following the 2022 Winter Olympics and a bronze medal win at the World Championships, she decided to quit figure skating. Having trained intensely since age five and being homeschooled, Alysa expressed a deep craving for human connection. She felt her childhood was "abnormal," comparing training to having a "job" or "burden".
Alysa felt she lacked agency in her career, describing herself as a "dress-up doll" who didn't get to choose her own music or programs. She wanted to engage in typical teenage activities, which she had missed, such as hanging out with her four younger siblings, attending college, getting her driver's license, and travelling. Her father, Arthur Liu, revealed that she suffered from "trauma" and "unhappiness" leading up to her break. That period was also complicated by Alysa and her father being targeted in a foreign spying operation during the 2022 Games.
Arthur Liu fled China as a political refugee after participating in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The U.S. DOJ alleged that Chinese agents targeted him to silence his pro-democracy views. In 2021, a man named Matthew Ziburis impersonated a U.S. Olympic official to request Alysa and Arthur's passport numbers for a fake travel preparedness check. Arthur refused, sensing something was wrong. Then, during the 2022 Beijing Games, Alysa reported being followed by a stranger who asked her to come to his apartment. As a result, Alysa had to participate in the event under heightened security. After the 2022 games, she retired; however, she returned in 2026.

Alysa Liu returned to competitive figure skating in March 2024 after realising that she missed the sport's unique mental and physical challenges. Following her initial retirement at age 16 in 2022, she spent nearly two years away, pursuing a "normal" life, including attending UCLA and travelling. Alysa needed the "adrenaline rush" of the sport and found that college "wasn't challenging enough" for her. Stepping away from figure skating allowed Alysa to heal from the isolation and burnout she felt during the pandemic and her first Olympic run, ultimately helping her rediscover a genuine love for the sport.
