Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, is no more. The Indian politician died in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning, January 28, 2026. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the political fraternity, including his party members and the opposition. Ajit was 66 years old at the time of his death. As details and visuals of the disastrous plane crash surfaced online, his fans have expressed heartbreak. They shared their condolences with his family and hoped that they could find the strength to deal with the unexpected grief.
In a tragic incident on January 28, 2026, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar passed away after his chartered aircraft crashed in Baramati, Pune district. The 66-year-old leader was travelling in a Learjet 45 (Registration: VT-SSK) operated by VSR. The crash occurred around 8:45 a.m. IST at the Baramati Airport runway threshold while the aircraft was attempting to land. The aircraft reportedly encountered difficulties during its final approach. Initial reports from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Press Trust of India (PTI) confirmed that all personnel on board, including Ajit Pawar and five others, have died.

The Indian politician was en route from Mumbai to Baramati to address a public meeting related to the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections. Local police, fire brigades, and NDRF teams were deployed to the crash site to extinguish the fire and conduct rescue operations. While a technical malfunction is suspected, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause, including potential technical failure or weather-related issues.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed in an official statement that Ajit Pawar was among the six people killed when the chartered aircraft, a Learjet 45 (registration VT-SSK), crashed during its landing attempt. Besides the NCP leader, the crew members and three other individuals of the aircraft lost their lives. The crew included the Pilot-in-Command and a First Officer, and besides them, two staff members (including a Personal Security Officer and an attendant) and one additional individual were also present in the aircraft. Visuals from the site showed the plane split into pieces and engulfed in flames.

Ajit Pawar's death has triggered widespread shock and mourning across the Indian political spectrum. Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi reportedly expressed deep condolences and inquired about the situation in Baramati from Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis. Notably, the latter had recently chaired a cabinet meeting attended by Ajit Pawar just a day prior. Shiv Sena UBT MP, Priyanka Chaturvedi broke down in tears during an interview, describing the loss as "heart-rending" and praising Ajit's commitment to Maharashtra despite their political differences. West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee called for a "proper investigation", and stated:
