'AHS' Returns With Season 13 Without Key Stars, Creators Cite Availability And Story Requirements

Ryan Murphy and Ned Martel reveal the reasons behind the absence of some actors in AHS Season 13
As mentioned, AHS is staging a major comeback with a host of familiar faces stepping back into the fold. For its 13th chapter, the series has confirmed the return of performers like Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson and Billie Lourd.
However, the lineup is not complete, with several beloved regulars missing from the roster. Among those absent is Taissa Farmiga, who has taken on three separate roles across the franchise's run. At the New York City premiere on September 23, co-creator Ryan Murphy spoke about Farmiga's absence.
Ryan said that he will always have affection for the 32-year-old actress, but sometimes narrative requirements dictate casting decisions. He noted that actor availability often becomes a hurdle and at times a particular character simply does not fit into the plot being told. Murphy also mentioned that anyone who has been part of the show remains part of its family and that work on the following season is already underway.
Writer-producer Ned Martel shared a similar opinion. He said there were many fan-favorite performers whom the team adored and would have loved to include, and that enthusiasm was mutual. Yet he pointed out that the limited runtime never allows for everyone to return.
Denis O'Hare, a fixture since the early seasons, has earlier stated that he was not invited back for this installment. Veteran Lily Rabe is also missing this time. Ariana Grande, too, had initially been announced for the ensemble before leaving due to other commitments.
Murphy said in another interview that Ariana’s participation was tied to an idea that has since been shelved, which would have brought cast members from his 2015 series Scream Queens into Season 13. He explained that Grande's tour schedule made the timing impossible, though she had expressed a desire to still be involved.
American Horror Story is changing one format with Season 13
AHS Season 13 marks a formatting shift for the long-running anthology. Unlike earlier chapters which unfolded as hour-long stories, this edition will be told through half-hour episodes.
While speaking in an interview, executive producers and writers Ned Martel and Charlie Carver addressed the change and assured that the shorter length will not reduce the level of fear or shock. Martel said the idea to trim the episodes came from Ryan Murphy.
Ned explained that the condensed format allowed them to pack each installment with rich storytelling, unexpected twists, scares, and moments of humor. He added that viewers would still feel fulfilled after each episode because the direction of the plot would remain unpredictable even with known characters returning.
The show has always worked as an anthology, with each season presenting a standalone story and the cast taking on new roles. While small-scale crossovers have happened before, season 13 expands that concept significantly, with some performers portraying five or more distinct characters.
Carver told ScreenRant that those who appreciate fine detail will find plenty of hidden tributes. He said that every department contributed to honoring all 13 seasons, with countless references woven into the new episodes. Discussing the work behind the scenes, Martel spoke about the prosthetics team. He revealed that the crew created visuals so disturbing that they were hard to describe. According to him, the season will deliver a level of body horror that television has not witnessed before.
