Golfer, Aaron Rai recently made history as the first Englishman to win the Wanamaker Trophy since Jim Barnes won it in 1919. He made a historic breakthrough after securing a stellar win at the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club on May 17, 2026.  The Indian-born English golfer's victory marks the biggest milestone of his career. But it was never an easy ride for Aaron, who worked hard to achieve the milestone.

Aaron Rai was introduced to golf by accident

Aaron Rai's career began when he was just 17 years old but the preparation began way back. He grew up in a working-class British household and Indian and Kenyan roots. Do you know, Aaron was introduced to golf by accident? Yes, it all happened when Aaron’s mother bought him plastic golf clubs instead of hockey sticks.

Aaron’s father, Amrik Singh was a community worker and had no background of golf. But seeing his son’s love for the sport, Amrik Singh taught himself the mechanic of the sport through books, so that he could coach his son.

Why does Aaron Rai uses iron covers for his golf clubs?

Aaron began playing golf at the age of 4 and it is one of the costliest sports. Financial sacrifices were required in the household to support Aaron’s dream to pursue golf as a career. The family made immense financial sacrifices to support Aaron’s talent. The financial crunch prompted a meticulous routine to preserve his gear from a very young age.

When Aaron was seven or eight years old, his father purchased a set of Titleist 690 MBs that cost between 800 and 1,000 British pounds. The equipment was highly valued by the athlete since he knew the pain his father took for the same. Since then, following the practice session, Aaron’s father implemented a strict cleaning regimen by clearing every groove with a pin and baby oil before covering the irons. In an interview with Sirius XM PGA Tour, Aaron said:

“It started from the age of four years old, when my dad used to pay for my equipment. He paid for my membership, paid for my entry fees. It wasn't money that we really had, to be honest, but he'd always buy me the best clubs.”

Aaron’s father thought it would be good to put the equipment on iron covers to protect them. In an same interview, Aaron elaborated on the same and revealed that the iron covers is a reminder for him to appreciate the value of things. In his words:

“When we used to go out and practice, he used to clean every single groove afterward with a pin and baby oil, and to protect the golf clubs he thought it would be good to put iron covers on them. And I've pretty much had iron covers on all my sets ever since, just to kind of appreciate the value of what I have."

How much did Aaron Rai earn from the PGA Championship win?

Aaron Rai’s victory broke a 10-year consecutive winning streak by American players at the PGA Championship. As per multiple reports, the PGA Championship overall purse this year had been USD 20.5 million, and reportedly, the winner, Aaron Rai, got his share of USD 3.69 million. Aaron Rai took home more than USD 3 million, and reportedly, he is the only individual to have his hands on this amount. With his alleged salary from the PGA Championship, Aaron Rai's career earnings are now reportedly USD 16 million.

Amid his iconic 2026 PGA Championship win, his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi Rai has come to the limelight. After his iconic win, Aaron Rai credited his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi Rai for playing a "huge role" in his life and career. His comments came during his post-match interview after securing his third DP World Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in November 2025. He was quoted by The Mirror as saying:

"It's hard for me to really sum up how much of an effect she's had on me as a person, and also that actually feeds into my golf."
