A Toxic Love Story is Netflix’s new true-crime documentary that follows the case of Michelle Hadley, who was arrested in 2016 and spent 88 days in jail after being accused of cyberstalking her ex-fiancé’s wife. The charges claimed she sent threatening emails and arranged attacks, but investigators later discovered it was an elaborate frame-up orchestrated by her ex, U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz, and his wife Angela.

Michelle was exonerated, while Angela served prison time and Ian was later convicted and sentenced to over 10 years. The makers recently opened up about the new things that have been added to the documentary. Keep reading to know more!

A Toxic Love Story makers admitted that some questions related to the case will remain unanswered

A Toxic Love Story

Netflix documentaries have always focused on details that remain unknown to the public. Shows like A Toxic Love Story depend on in-depth research to ensure that not a single piece of important information is left out.

Director Alexandra Lacey and producer Emma Supple revealed in a recent interview that the documentary features unseen police bodycam footage that opens up in detail about how wrong allegations were made against Michelle Hadley, landing her in prison. Alexandra and Emma have still admitted that there are things in the case that will remain unsolved. Lacey said:

“There is a police body camera footage, much of it, which has never before been seen.”

Alexandra said that the footage helped a lot in creating the documentary, saying that it is an important part of the show. She stated that it is because the footage helps the audience to witness the story opening up with the couple who felt like they were being stalked. Emma stated that since the planning made in the case happened behind closed doors, the recordings helped the filmmakers because it shows the scheme being made in real time.

Emma revealed that they took multiple months before creating the documentary since they spoke to Michelle and tried to understand what happened with her. She said:

“We never want to go into an interview not having spent time with people and getting to know them and earning their trust. I don’t think she’d ever really spoken at length about [it]. It was a difficult area for her to speak about, but it was so important to really understanding what happened.”

Alexandra addressed the case by saying that she always believed that there was something else about it compared to what was being reported. She said that the intention behind the documentary was to allow the audience to make their own conclusion about it.

Netflix’s new documentary has preferred to ignore a few details of the case

A Toxic Love Story

Although A Toxic Love Story aims to bring an authentic presentation of Michelle Hadley’s case, it has also ignored a few details. Notably, the reasons behind the same have not been revealed by the creators.

Hadley said in the documentary that her relationship with Ian turned controlling early on. According to her, he pressured her to quit a better-paying job and take a marketing role at Disneyland Resort for USD 20,000 less, because it was his “favourite place” and he had former coworkers there who could keep an eye on her. She also alleges he tracked her location and would call if she went off her usual routes between home, school, and work.

Ian didn’t take part in the Netflix documentary and is now serving 10 years and 1 month in federal prison. One of the most serious claims came on February 14, 2014. Hadley says Ian pushed her to sleep with a man he found on Craigslist while he watched. Court filings state she was sick and on cold medicine. He reportedly gave her whiskey, set up cameras in the bedroom, and filmed from another room.

When she later compared it to rape, he got upset. She asked him to delete the footage, and he refused. Money was another issue. Hadley put over USD 14,000 into a USD 460,000 Anaheim condo they bought together. After they broke up in 2015, she kept paying half the mortgage even after moving out. In late 2015, their lawyers agreed Ian would take over payments starting June 2016, or sell and split the money. Prosecutors later argued Ian tried to frame her to force her to give up her share.

Hadley was arrested twice. The first was June 24, 2016, after Angela reported an attack. Hadley posted USD 100,000 bail, and police had taken her phone and laptop. After another incident on July 13 involving a teen, she was arrested again on July 14, 2016, with USD 1 million bail. She says she only met Angela once, in court on June 17, 2016, and didn’t know the accusations before then.

In May 2016, Hadley started getting alerts about email accounts she didn’t create. Craigslist later asked her to verify a “gang rape fantasy” post. She reported it and also says she told Anaheim police, the Justice Department, Chapman University, and Disneyland about Ian’s behaviour and the fake emails, but no one followed up.

Before her first arrest, police traced a Craigslist ad to Ian’s email and IP address, and he admitted it. More evidence linked him on June 21, 2016, yet Hadley was still arrested on June 24, 2016. Angela had claimed she was pregnant with twins and miscarried due to harassment. Ian later told police that was false, and that he’d also urged her to end an earlier pregnancy.
