Following the success of House of the Dragon, a new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is finally arriving after a long wait on January 18, 2026. Just like the other two shows, the latest fantasy drama is arriving on HBO Max.
The prequel series arrives around two years after the second season of House of the Dragon was released. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features a completely new star cast, and this one is based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg. The stories of the novellas are set a long time before everything that happened in A Song of Ice and Fire universe.

A few reports have already claimed that the show will repeat the same formula of the other two shows, with a lot of graphic content. However, the same reports have said that the tone would be lighter in comparison. As the release date approaches, let’s have a look at the plot, number of episodes, and other details of the show.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms won’t follow the same format as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, with ten episodes. The new show will have six episodes, and their length will be less than an hour, with the final one reported to air for only 31 minutes. The first episode will be the longest with a runtime of 42 minutes.

The series will be available for streaming on HBO Max in the United States and Canada. Residents of the UK would be able to access the show on Sky Atlantic and Now. Episode 1 will premiere on January 18, 2026. The remaining episodes would have a weekly release from January 25, with the show ending next month on February 22.

As mentioned, the show will be adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, a collection of three novellas. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will follow the first novella, The Hedge Knight, where a squire named 'Dunk' meets a boy, 'Egg.' 'Dunk' is supposed to participate in a tournament at Ashford. 'Dunk' and 'Egg' are going to be the main focus of the storyline, and the former would later get into a dispute with 'Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen.'

Although the show is premiering in 2026, the makers have already renewed it for a second season. While addressing the press in November 2025, HBO and HBO Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the renewal. Notably, Francesca Orsi, the Head of Drama Series and Films of HBO, revealed in February 2025 that a total of three seasons have been planned. A few reports have stated that Season 2 will arrive sometime in 2027.
With six episodes in total, the first three have been directed by Owen Harris and the others by Sarah Adina Smith. Among the lead characters, 'Dunk' is being portrayed by Peter Claffey. Dexter Sol Ansell will appear as 'Egg' alongside Finn Vennett playing 'Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen.' The other important characters would be played by Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell.
