Her first attempt at an 8,000-meter peak ended in tragedy when she was among the climbers killed in the devastating Broad Peak avalanche that also claimed the life of legendary mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja. As tributes pour in, Geis' final Instagram posts have resurfaced.
Geis was part of a 10-member international expedition attempting to summit Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The summit, standing at 8,051 meters in Pakistan's Karakoram range, was Geis' first attempt at climbing one of the world's 14 "eight-thousanders." Before departing, she excitedly shared that she was heading to Pakistan for her "first big kid climbing expedition." She wrote:
"Let's see if we can get this body and these boots up Broad Peak."
In the final Instagram post on her account, originally shared by Moving Mountains, Sarah posed alongside fellow climber Sohail Sakhi, who also lost his life in the Broad Peak tragedy. The post marked Geis' first attempt at climbing an 8,000-meter peak and Sakhi's final expedition.
Geis joined a 10-member international expedition led by Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, the record-breaking climber whose extraordinary achievements were documented in Netflix's 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
On Thursday, disaster struck when a massive dual avalanche hit the team as they ascended the mountain. Elite Exped later confirmed that Purja and multiple members of the expedition had lost their lives.
Pakistani rescue teams recovered Geis' remains alongside fellow climbers Pur Bahadur Gurung of Nepal and Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest.
Before becoming a full-time climber, Geis, a Texas native, owned and operated a Pilates studio in San Antonio. She also worked in her family's real estate business and served as a board member of San Antonio Sports, helping bring major sporting events to her hometown.
Despite establishing a thriving business, Geis announced in February 2026 that she was walking away from her business to pursue mountaineering full-time. "Taking a giant leap of faith into the unknown to see where life goes," she wrote on Instagram. "I have a sneaking suspicion there will be lots of helmets, harnesses, and crampons involved."
Among the posts resurfacing after her death is a photograph Geis shared last year overlooking Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. Describing it as a self-portrait, she wrote that it was taken after witnessing "one of the most incredible sunrises of my life."
Her final months on social media documented not only preparations for Pakistan but also a woman embracing uncertainty in pursuit of a lifelong dream. Speaking after the tragedy, Geis' father, George Geis, described his daughter as someone who could accomplish anything she set her mind to. He said:
"That's what she wanted to do, was go hike. She was a very positive person, and very smart, and could do almost anything she wanted to do."
The search and recovery operation on Broad Peak is ongoing, and Elite Exped recently confirmed the devastating news that the expedition's beloved leader, Nirmal Purja, has passed away. On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Nimsdai Foundation confirmed the tragic news with an official statement, adding that none of the 10 members have survived the disaster.
The foundation also confirmed the passing of his trusted Nepalese climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung ("Yukta") and Nima Sherpa. The statement said:
"Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja, tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive."
Geis was one of the four climbers first recovered by ground rescue teams, alongside Omani climber Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy and Nepali guide Pur Bahadur Gurung. Their remains have been airlifted from the mountain for formal identification and repatriation. Rescuers have now accounted for nine of the expedition's 10 members, but severe weather, deep snow, and hazardous high-altitude conditions continue to delay the recovery of the remaining victims.
