The news of his death was first announced by his team via an Instagram post on September 14, 2026. In his personal life, Bob Mackie had a short-lived marriage with Lulu Porter.
According to reports, Bob Mackie's ex-wife, Lulu Porter, was a singer and actress. She was born on July 28, 1940, in Youngstown, Ohio, USA, to parents, Ada Glenna ‘Adie’ Stout and Absalom B ‘Abb’ Wolford.
Lulu had made a name for herself in Hollywood in the ‘60s with films like The Brass Bottle (1964), Hollywood a Go Go (1964), Branded (1965), and Bob Mackie: The Naked Illusion.
Lulu’s big break came when she was singing at a small nightclub called Ye Little Club in Beverly Hills. While finishing up her 25-minute act, which consisted of nine songs with a three-piece combo, she caught the eye of Pierre Salinger, who was President John F. Kennedy’s press secretary at that time. Pierre congratulated Lulu after the performance. He was accompanied there by Patricia Kennedy Lawford and Marilyn Monroe’s last publicist, Patricia ‘Pat’ Newcomb.
This connection proved vital for Lulu Porter as she soon got the chance to represent the United States at the Third International Music Festival. For the occasion, she sang with a symphony orchestra on one of the days. Another day, she sang with a jazz band in Poland, earning a special reward for the same.
Lulu had settled in Los Angeles around 1955. Some of her most famous songs as a singer include The Brass Bottle, Nobody Hurt But Me, I Gotta Be With You, Mr. Music Man, and The Malibu Seal II.
Lulu Porter tied the knot with designer Bob Mackie on March 14, 1960. During their marriage, the former couple welcomed a son named Robin Gordon Mackie. Lulu and Bob’s marriage was not long-lasting, and they divorced in 1963. The very next year, Lulu married her manager Jerry Fonarow on March 8, 1964, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Bob Mackie passed away at the age of 87. On September 14, 2026, his team took to his Instagram page and shared that he had lived his 87 years to the fullest, especially working as a Fashion and Costume Designer, just like he had dreamed. According to Bob’s team, he will live on forever through his extraordinary designs. The post read:
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
While Bob Mackie had worked with several big names in Hollywood like Tina Turner, Better Midler, and Cher, many might not be aware that he had also worked on the sketch of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President' dress back in 1962. Jean Louis had instructed him to create the preliminary design illustration.
Before his death, Bob Mackie confessed in an interview with PEOPLE that he always wanted to be a designer. He said:
“I always knew what I wanted to do. But I knew I was in trouble when my parents gave me a catcher’s mitt for Christmas. Then my good aunt gave me a jewelry-making kit. I made a few pairs of earrings, and that was that.”
