Sunny Deol is one of the most talented names in Bollywood. The actor has done some of the most iconic roles in his four-decade-long career and has appeared in more than 100 films. With films like Ghayal, Damini, Darr, Jeet, Arjun Pandit, Gadar, Border, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and many more, Sunny established his name in the industry and is one of the highest-paid actors. While Sunny’s fame has no bounds, very less in known about his wife, Pooja Deol.
Not many people know this, but Sunny Deol’s wife, Pooja, is half Indian and half British. Born in 1957, Pooja’s father, Krishan Dev Mahal, is of Indian descent and lived in London, while her mother, June Sarah Mahal, is British. Pooja hails from a royal British family, as her mother, June Sarah, has royal roots. Pooja Deol was born as Lynda Deol and was the childhood friend of Sunny Deol. It was only after her wedding to the actor that Pooja changed her name.
Pooja Deol is hardly seen in public. But do you know, Pooja once tried her hand at acting? She made a guest appearance in the 1966 film, Himmat. Though Pooja Deol is a mystery to Deol fans, it is said that she is a writer by profession and had an uncredited contribution to the screenplay of Yamla Pagla Deewana, starring her father-in-law, Dharmendra, her husband, Sunny Deol, and her brother-in-law, Bobby Deol.
Pooja and Sunny tied the knot in 1984, just a year after the latter made his successful film debut in Bollywood. The duo had a Punjabi wedding, which was kept as low-key and private as possible. Apparently, after their wedding, the couple maintained a long-distance marriage, as Pooja resided in London at the time. Sunny Deol would pay her frequent visits amidst his hectic schedule.
Their wedding pictures were leaked and published in a magazine. At that time, Sunny Deol called the pictures false and denied ever being married. While the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony, the decision to keep their wedding a secret for the longest time was made by the Deol family. The main reason behind this was that they did not want Sunny’s personal life to take a toll on his newly established film career. Pooja and Sunny are proud parents of two sons, Karan Deol and Rajveer Deol.
Unlike many star wives, Sunny Deol’s wife is rarely seen at filmi parties or red-carpet events. In fact, it was during their elder son, Karan Deol’s, wedding in 2023 that Pooja posed for the paps. In one of Sunny's throwback interviews, he dismissed the notion of forcing his wife to seclude herself from the media. Speaking about the same, he said:
“Neither my mother nor my wife was forced to stay away from the limelight. My wife is her own person. She has always had the liberty to make her own decisions. To not make public appearances is her own call. Like I said, neither my father (Dharmendra) nor I have forced the women in our family to follow our rules.”
