He had initially signed with the team after going undrafted in 2024 and spent his last two seasons on the practice squad. It is worth mentioning that Sam Hartman has also not appeared in any of the regular-season games for the Commanders. As the athlete navigates this time, the focus has shifted to his personal life. Sam is believed to be in a relationship with Tyla Ochoa.
According to reports, Sam Hartman's girlfriend, Tyla Ochoa, is a former NCAA Division I soccer player. She began playing the sport at a young age, and during her time at La Costa Canyon High School, she was named CIF Player of the Year. As per her LinkedIn profile, Tyla was also a track and field athlete.
After graduating from high school, Tyla went on to play as a defender for Wake Forest University. Tyla played a significant role on the team and helped lead them to the NCAA National Championship in 2024. She graduated from the university in the same year with a Bachelor's degree in Politics and International Affairs.
Despite her love for sports, Tyla Ochoa did not go pro. Instead, after college, she transitioned into Tech sales. Tyla’s LinkedIn indicates that she joined a company called TEKsystems in September 2025 as a Sales Development Representative. There, her role is to connect IT talent with innovative companies by qualifying leads as well as initiating strategic conversations.
In early 2025, Tyla worked in inside sales and customer experience at BetterDaysCo. She was responsible for managing client accounts and executing marketing campaigns at the company. Tyla’s impressive portfolio also reveals that she is a certified Pilates instructor. According to her, she earned her certification “to help others build strength and balance through mindful movement.” She added:
“Teaching has also allowed me to connect with a vibrant community, combining my love for fitness with meaningful social interaction and personal growth.”
Coming to Tyla Ochoa and Sam Hartman's relationship, the duo first sparked romance rumors in January 2022, when the former shared a number of TikTok videos featuring herself and Sam together. One of the videos showed the pair inside a car lip-syncing. Other clips showed footage from a fishing trip and a filter video where Sam Hartman was paired with ‘Maui’ from Moana and Tyla with ‘Flynn Rider' from Tangled.
During an episode of the On The Homefront podcast, host Jeff Dudan asked the Commanders star if he was single ahead of the NFL draft. While Sam did not take Tyla’s name, he said:
“No, I have a girlfriend. She plays soccer at Wake Forest, and she's awesome. Yeah, she's great. She'll be down here for the draft and everything. This is her last year. She's got one more season left.”
Soon, the clip of Sam’s statements went viral on social media. Die-hard fans of the athlete cross-referenced details against the team’s roster and realized that there was a high chance Sam was talking about none other than Tyla Ochoa.
Tyla reportedly graduated from Wake Forest in May 2024. She played her senior season for the Damon Deacons. Unfortunately, Tyla’s 2024 campaign was cut short when she suffered an injury just 29 minutes into the season opener against Army. However, her team still managed to reach its first-ever NCAA Division I Women's College Cup final.
In early 2025, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Sam Hartman and Tyla Ochoa had stopped following each other on social media. This led many to believe that the two had broken up. Interestingly, when one of Tyla's followers commented on her post to ask about their relationship, she deleted the comment. As of now, neither Sam nor Tyla has issued a statement addressing a breakup.
