India has found its new Union Minister of Education. Veteran BJP leader Pralhad Joshi was appointed to the role by President Droupadi Murmu on July 25, 2026, following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan amid nationwide student protests. The 63-year-old brings over two decades of parliamentary experience as a five-time Member of Parliament.

As the longtime politician takes over India's education portfolio, let us take a look at Joshi's political career so far, from his educational background and rise in the BJP to his personal life.

What is Pralhad Joshi's educational qualification?

One of the biggest questions that the people are wondering about is how educated the new minister is. Pralhad Joshi holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Kadasiddheshwar Arts College (K.S. Arts College), Hubballi, which is affiliated with Karnataka University, Dharwad. Before attending college, he completed his primary education at Railway School and later studied at New English School in Hubballi. His academic journey largely remained rooted in Karnataka before he entered public life.

Pralhad Joshi was born on November 27, 1962, in Vijayapura (formerly Bijapur), Karnataka, in a middle-class family with no prior political connection. His father, Shri Venkatesh Joshi, reportedly worked with the Indian Railways, and much of his childhood was spent in Karnataka. Despite spending years in the Union Cabinet, Joshi keeps his personal life away from the spotlight.

In his youth, Joshi was connected with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which eventually paved his way to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Dharwad constituency of Karnataka. He has kept winning in the following general elections and is a five-time Member of Parliament. This also makes him one of the longest-serving MPs from the state for the BJP. 

Over the past two decades, Pralhad Joshi has handled several important portfolios in the Narendra Modi government, serving his time as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Union Minister of Coal, Union Minister of Mines, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy. He also served as the President of the BJP's Karnataka unit.

Why was Pralhad Joshi given the Education Ministry?

President Droupadi Murmu assigned Joshi the additional charge of the Ministry of Education after accepting Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. While continuing to oversee the Ministries of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy, Joshi will now also lead the Education Ministry as the government works to restore confidence in the examination system following the NEET controversy.

After assuming office, Joshi thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the responsibility. He also praised his predecessor, noting that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and several major reforms were implemented during Dharmendra Pradhan's tenure. Joshi said in his speech:

"In the last four to five years, Dharmendra Pradhan also implemented the National Education Policy, and several important initiatives were undertaken. The country has made significant progress in the new education system. Under the guidance of the Prime Minister, I will work to the best of my ability and fulfil my responsibilities with dedication."

Pralhad Joshi's net worth

According to Pralhad Joshi's 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit, his family has declared a combined net worth of approximately Rs. 21.09 crore, with total liabilities of Rs. 8.01 crore. The affidavit states that the family owns Movable assets worth around Rs. 8.97 crore, including bank deposits, mutual funds, company shares, insurance policies, provident funds, jewellery and other investments.

His portfolio also includes immovable assets worth approximately Rs. 12.11 crore, including residential properties in Hubballi and Bengaluru, agricultural land in Dharwad district and other land holdings in Karnataka. Joshi has also disclosed investments in mutual funds, private companies, provident funds and life insurance policies.

Regarding his personal life, Joshi is a married man. He married his wife, Jyoti Joshi, on November 26, 1992. The couple has been married for 34 years and share three daughters, but their family life is largely kept away from the spotlight.
