'Unfamiliar' has been making headlines as the truth about 'Josef Koleev's' fate hangs by a thread. So, as things get tangled in Netflix's spy thriller, here's what you need to know.
The German spy thriller series, Unfamiliar, has been making headlines since its release on Netflix. The series has captivated the audience with its gritty portrayal of espionage and family secrets. Helmed by Lennart Ruff and Philipp Leinemann and created by Paul Coates, the series has become one of the most talked-about releases on the OTT platform. The six-episode series features an impeccable cast, including Susanne Wolff and Felix Kramer. The story of Unfamiliar revolves around the consequences of past actions and the lengths parents are willing to go to protect their children.
However, if you think the ending will bring you peace, think again, because it leaves viewers desperate for answers. The series follows former BND agents 'Simon' and 'Meret', who have spent sixteen years living a quiet life in Berlin while running a crime-scene cleaning business. Our agents soon find themselves in a web of lies to safeguard their daughter, 'Nina', which further strains the family. However, things change pace when a Belarusian named 'Josef Koleev' from their past returns for retribution, shattering their lives. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
'Katya' finds herself at odds when she betrays the former spy to protect 'Nina', since she believes they are corrupt and cannot protect her biological daughter. However, the final episode culminates in a tragic outpouring. After a violent shootout, 'Simon' is hospitalised for a brain aneurysm. 'Katya', who is the biological mother of 'Nina', uses this opportunity to strike a deal with BND and orchestrates the arrest of 'Simon' and 'Meret' while manipulating 'Nina' into leaving with her.
To understand why the writers ended Unfamiliar the way they did, one needs to look back at the mission in Belarus. Yes, it all started sixteen years ago when 'Simon' and 'Meret's' handler, 'Gregor', orchestrated a plan that turned into a disaster. 'Josef' tries to poison 'Katya' and their unborn child. However, while 'Simon' saves the baby and 'Katya', he told 'Meret' that they had died, defining the series, which further leads to them adopting 'Nina' with this double deceit. Every dispute in Unfamiliar starts with this secret and unravels with 'Katya's' return to reclaim her life and child.
Things further worsen when 'Josef Koleev' has inside information and keeps the protagonists behind throughout the story. The finale reveals 'Starfish' as the BND mole, who is 'Ben' rather than 'Alice'. We further find out how 'Ben' kept 'Josef' informed and framed 'Alice'. However, 'Josef' is caught, and his own wife, 'Vera', records his confession of deception. She uses this evidence to blackmail him rather than report him. This discovery forces 'Ben' to obey 'Vera' and maintain BND corruption after the immediate threat is gone.
'Josef Koleev' is the primary villain in Unfamiliar, and he faces an equally grim fate. However, the show leaves his demise intentionally vague. Things go south for him when 'Vera' turns against him after discovering he poisoned 'Katya' and his child years earlier. As the new ambassador, she discovers he hinders her political objectives. In his last moments, 'Josef' is escorted to his father-in-law's room. Gun cocked, he is told his time has arrived. However, the scene cuts at that moment, leaving his ending open-ended and keeping his return to season two a possibility.
Unfamiliar truly lives up to its name, leaving the audience completely shocked. The emotional climax takes place at the hospital where 'Simon' is undergoing surgery for his aneurysm. In this sensitive moment, the family breaks up. 'Meret' knows she can't stay with 'Simon' after knowing everything about what he did and the lies he has kept from her for years. She feels that his falsehoods have damaged their trust, rightfully so. On the other hand, 'Katya' conducts her strategy as 'Simon' heals. In the final scenes, we see her offer 'Simon' and 'Meret's' location to 'Julika' and 'Ben' at the BND community.
This further helps her find a safe passage for herself and 'Nina'. 'Katya' considers this a necessary evil because 'Simon' and 'Meret' are confined, and continuing with 'Chem' would likely k*ll 'Nina'. She tactfully manipulates the young girl about 'Simon' and 'Meret', getting her to leave willingly. In the closing moments, Unfamiliar once again leaves the viewers with an unsettling feeling. While 'Katya' convinces 'Nina' to get into a car, lying to her that her parents are right behind them, 'Meret' runs out of the hospital as the car drives away, only to be surrounded by police.
The series ends with 'Ben' accusing 'Simon' and 'Meret' of the murder of 'Jonas Auken'. While the end feels poorly written as the heroes end up in jail, their marriage is ruined, and their daughter is with a stranger, it also sets the stage for the drama that could possibly lead to Season 2 of the show. 'Nina' is with 'Katya', facing an uncertain future, while her parentage remains a ticking time bomb. However, whether things will get better remains a question we are not yet familiar with.
