A UK mother, Courtney Gartshore, killed her own three-month-old baby girl with a hairdyer in 2023. She has been sentenced to six years in jail.

The 28-year-old mother was partying at the time of the incident. Her daughter, Dahlia-Rose Gartshore died of significant burns due to the heat of the appliance used on her in Peterhed, Aberdeenshire in September 2023.
The three-month-old suffered burns to 18 percent of her body including head, neck, upper body, and one of her arms. Her injuries were extremly shocking, and the parademic thought that the baby's body was decomposing. She was convicted guilty following a trial and investigation at the High Court in Aberdeen in July 2026.
She was stentenced by judge Simon Collins KC, who found that the mother did not want to kill her baby, but it was the highest degree of carelessness. He added that one could clearly understand that the child was in severe distress and pain. He also stated that she would have to live her rest of the life with knowledged that she was responsible for her death. He said:
"You will have to live the rest of your life with the knowledge that you were responsible for her death, This was a gross breach of the most basic duty as a parent."
It is worth mentioning that the mother claims she had no memory of the incident. She was drinking while she was in sole charge of the newborn baby. The police received a call from the Scottish Ambulance Service who alerted them about the death of the baby. Soon, investigation was launched and the mother was charged in November 2023.
She has been sentenced for six years in jail on August 14, 2026, as he believed that the mother didn't intend to kill or harm her child. The judge called it a tragic and disturbing xcase. The mother failed to her duty as a parent. He even stated that the mother still does not fully accept her guilt. The judge said:
"Notwithstanding the unanimous verdict of the jury, it is apparent that the accused still does not fully accept her guilt. I therefore do not accept that she has yet expressed genuine remorse for what she has done."
Her defence lawyer, Murray Macara, shared his thoughts on the incident and revealed that he has no proper explanation on why the mother used the hairdryer on the baby for atleast 20 minutes to an hour. But he believed that the baby was cold and she may have attemped to use it as a source of heat. At first, the 28-year-old denied the charged and told family and friends that her daughter died due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
However, the witness called in defence of the mother stated that the baby was not killed by heat injuries in his view as she was already dead. It is worth mentioning that the baby's DNA was found on the hairdryer and the mother and daughter were alone in the home at the time of the incident. CCTV footage showed that the mother arrived at 4 am in the night after drinking with her friends.
She informed the authorities about her baby's death at 9:40 a.m. She claimed that she had woken up to find her baby dead but did not talk about the hairdryer incident. Her defence lawyer claimed that the mother suffered with mental health issues. As soon as the news surfaced, netizens shared their opionion.
One user on Instagram wrote, "Why are there so many people continuing to have babies they can’t care for? You don’t have to have kids, people!" Another one commented, "Being drunk isn’t an excuse for torturing your baby so badly that she died from it."
