‘Elliot Augustine’s’ unexpected death and the judgment of the pond

The finale of The Way Home starts a few seconds after the Lingermore explosion, which happens in 1925, and leads to the death of ‘Elliot Augustine’ after he is shot. However, ‘Kat Landry,’ ‘Alice Dhawan,’ and ‘Jacob Landry’ are not giving up so soon. The trio joins each other to bring ‘Elliot’ to the pond and get him back to modern medicine. ‘Jacob’ finally brings ‘Elliot Augustine’ to the present day, where ‘Del’ immediately calls the authorities, and ‘Elliot’ Augustine survives.

On the other hand, the pond has made its choice as it refuses to take ‘Kat’ when she tries to jump with ‘Alice.’ ‘Kat’ is eventually stranded in 1926, while ‘Elliot’ is safe in the present day. Although ‘Kat’ is stuck in time, she is forced to deal with some unfinished business in the past, which involves ‘Fern.’ This sets the events of the finale as ‘Kat’ cannot return home until she helps heal the Landry line in another era.

‘Fern’s’ loss, ‘Cliff’s’ death, and the baby that changes everything

‘Fern’ is grieving over something when ‘Kat’ finds her. The town’s temperance inspector, ‘Cliff,’ is the love of ‘Fern,’ and although they were supposed to meet on New Year’s Day, ‘Cliff’ never showed up. One of the Augie Boys later reveals that four of the five bodies under Lingermore were pulled out, and they found ‘Cliff’s’ hat, confirming that he died in the explosion. ‘Fern’ reveals that she is expecting a child, and she was planning to share the good news with ‘Cliff.’

In her final moments before her death, ‘Fern’ uses the pond to go back in time and tell ‘Cliff’ that she is pregnant. ‘Kat’ comforts ‘Fern’ and helps her say goodbye to someone she loves. This moment even reframes ‘Fern’s’ bitterness across the show. She is a young woman who lost her love and raised his child alone. It even links to the Landry legacy, since ‘Fern’s’ child continues the family line that leads to ‘Colton,’ ‘Kat,’ and ‘Alice.’

Meanwhile, ‘Kat’ confronts ‘Grayson Goodwin’ at the Herald office in 1926, where the latter admits that the Landrys are the rightful owners of Lingermore, as per the will of ‘Susanna Augustine.’ This provides a closure to another mystery that was seen throughout the season.

Present-day reunions, along with proposals, forgiveness, and one last jump

‘Elliot’ is fine now, and the present-day Landrys resolve their arcs. ‘Jacob’ visits ‘Elijah’ on his last day in the past. ‘Elijah’ tells ‘Jacob’ that the farm is there because of him, giving ‘Jacob’ the closure that he needed so far. ‘Jacob’ then reconciles with ‘Abby Goodwin’ at home, convincing her to stay in Port Haven with him. ‘Kat’ returns to the present day after saying goodbye to ‘Fern’ and reunites with ‘Elliot’ while starting to write her book at the same time. ‘Elliot’ then pops the question to ‘Kat,’ and ‘Alice’ plays the song, Already Home.

As the show ends, the Landrys and Goodwins are spotted getting together for the marriage ceremony of ‘Jacob’ and ‘Abby.’ The Landrys then recall the people that they met in the past as part of the time travel. While the wedding ends, ‘Kat’ and ‘Alice’ are satisfied with the happy ending. However, they also say that an ending always marks a new beginning, following which they jump together into the pool, with their fate not revealed to the audience.
