Production for the upcoming installment of The Last of Us started in March 2026. But the British Columbia directory for productions recently disclosed that filming for Season 3 has been stopped by HBO. Notably, the latest development will be applicable between June 1 and June 28, 2026.
While HBO has not provided further details, the situation is reportedly linked to the FIFA World Cup. The event is scheduled for June 11, 2026, and it will end eight days later on June 19, 2026. Furthermore, multiple matches will be hosted by Canada in Toronto and Vancouver. As per the original schedule, filming for the new season was supposed to end by November 27, 2026. However, it remains unknown if the latest decision is going to impact it in any manner.
The news arrives after set pictures from the third season were revealed online. It featured Kaitlyn Dever and Kyriana Kratter. The duo could be spotted walking on the abandoned streets of Seattle. Kaitlyn, who portrays 'Abby,' holds a weapon in her hand, along with Kyriana as 'Lev,' appearing with a bow and arrow. The set photos were first shared by CaptCannuck66 and TheLastofUsBR on X (formerly Twitter).
While a lot of things for The Last of Us Season 3 have remained the same, the biggest change is the exit of Neil Druckmann, the co-creator. This is because he is busy with the development of another video game. The upcoming season is going to focus on 'Abby' and her past, including her father’s death and the confrontation with Ellie and Joel.
Following the end of The Last of Us Season 2, Kaitlyn Dever said in an interview with GQ that she has no idea about the plans for Season 3. However, she stated that, as per Craig Mazin, the upcoming season is going to be more intense. Craig later shared some details about The Last of Us Season 3 when he spoke to Collider in May 2025. He specifically addressed the length of the upcoming season and said:
“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different. The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it [in season 2]. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story.”
Craig also stated that there is an opportunity left to explore a lot of other things. Referring to 'Bill' and 'Frank’s' storyline, he said that it cannot be completed in the third season and that it is more likely to finish the storyline in a fourth season. However, The Last of Us has not been renewed for another season yet, and early reports have also claimed that it is going to be the final installment.
