According to a new update, PEOPLE acquired Shelley Fabares’ death certificate on September 2, 2026. It listed acute respiratory distress as the immediate cause.
While confirming the news of her death, Shelley’s family described her as a pillar of love, strength and comfort for those close to her. They said she was a devoted wife, stepmother and family member whose warmth, generosity and humor left a lasting impact on everyone she knew, and noted her gift for making people feel welcomed and valued.
The family added that while audiences knew her for bringing talent and warmth to every role, her most meaningful legacy was the love she shared, alongside the friendships she cherished and the family bonds she held close. They also stated:
“We will miss her deeply - not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives. We are heartbroken by her loss, yet profoundly grateful for the years we shared with her and for the joy, compassion, and love she brought to so many. We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we grieve.”
Shelley Fabares’ family had earlier shared that pneumonia led to her death. The actress had been living with autoimmune hepatitis and underwent a liver transplant in October 2000 after being on the waiting list for nearly two years.
Shelley Fabares' long-running liver battle started after a severe accident in 1994, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center noted in a 2003 write-up. She had sustained fractures to all the ribs on her left side during a construction mishap. ER doctors treated her for the break and suggested a routine check-up with her own doctor just to be safe.
The check-up uncovered a major red flag, as her liver enzyme levels were alarmingly high. At that point, physicians could not explain the reasons for the same. She started medication, which seemed to keep things under control for a few years, even though her numbers never returned to normal. In early 1999, the situation escalated.
She had a sudden bleeding episode that sent her to Cedars-Sinai's emergency room. Specialists found that her liver was in progressive failure and drugs were no longer enough to stop it, as explained by John Vierling, who led the hospital's Multi-Organ Transplant Program.
Shelley said that both she and her husband, Mike Farrell, had believed a transplant listing was merely a backup plan until doctors made it clear it was a matter of survival. She joined the waiting list in April 1999 and later spoke of that period as feeling like borrowed time, noting that a majority of patients on transplant lists do not make it to surgery. After waiting for months, she received a new liver in October 2000.
While she was recovering, Alzheimer's Association spokesperson Danny Chung linked her liver decline to an autoimmune condition. Looking back in the 2003 Cedars-Sinai feature, Shelley Fabares said that she owed her life to Vierling and to surgeon Steve Colquhoun, head of the liver transplant program. She added that the experience reshaped her outlook on life and ultimately deepened her marriage.
