Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleRussell Wilson and his ex-wife, Ashton Meem, had started their relationship months before the NFL quarterback created a household name for himself. The former couple first met as teenagers and went on to build a relationship that survived long-distance. However, sadly, the couple's relationship ended after just two years of marriage.
Russell Wilson and Ashton Meem had attended different schools, but they continued their relationship even after they graduated. Ashton continued with her studies at North Carolina State University while Meem studied at the University of Georgia.
Wilson and Meem first met while they were high school students in Virginia. Although they attended different schools, the two began dating and continued their relationship after graduating. However, they maintained their relationship as a long-distance romance while Wilson attended North Carolina State University. On the flip side, Meem studied at the University of Georgia. According to reports, they eventually reunited geographically, with Meem transferring to North Carolina and Wilson later transferring to the University of Wisconsin.
Russell and Ashton's relationship continued to grow even as he progressed in his football career. The former couple had started dating in 2006. It was in 2010 that the pair got engaged, according to various reports on social media. It was on January 14, 2012, that the former couple got married in Virginia. The wedding of the ex-pair came months before the Seattle Seahawks selected Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
When Russell Wilson announced his divorce from Ashton Meem, there were allegations that Ashton was dating Russell's teammate Golden Tate. According to a report by EOnline.com, Russell had released a small statement after separating from his former wife, Ashton. It read:
"I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don't come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding, and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter."
The news was not at all surprising, as the former couple had not been getting along for a very long time. Ashton earlier had told Seattle's Tom & Curley Show on KIRO-AM that she and Russell were trying to keep it real. In her words:
"We just try and keep it real, realize what my husband does is a job, it can change at any minute, and what really matters is we don't change no matter what changes around our environment."
The former pair had even discussed their plans apart from Russell's football life earlier. Ashton had shared that both she and her then-partner had received help from their family and friends. In her words:
"It really helps to have family and friends around and good mentors and people to talk to, to figure out other interests so that whenever that chapter closes we already know what other chapter we're going to try and start writing together."
Ashton stood by Wilson as he transitioned from a college football player to an NFL quarterback. The early years of their marriage were not at all easy, as Wilson had to focus heavily on his professional football career. For the unversed, it was in February 2014 that the Seahawks and Wilson won Super Bowl XLVIII, giving the quarterback one of the top achievements of his career at a very young age.
The exact reason Ashton and Wilson separated is not yet known. When he gave a statement about their separation in 2014, the exact cause of the rift was not mentioned. Wilson had clearly said that he did not want to speak further on the matter.
