It was on December 28, 1999, when Reliance launched its first refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat. One of the most complex single-site refineries, the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery became the most advanced and cost-competitive energy hub. In 2024, the refinery celebrated 25 years since its launch and became the world’s refining hub.

Reliance Jamnagar Refinery was the dream project of Dhirubhai Ambani

When Dhirubhai Ambani, Reliance Industries’ founder, wanted to open a refinery, all he got was a barren land in the desolated region of Jamnagar near a village called Motikhavdi. Many warned Dhirubhai against investing in the barren land, which had no roads, electricity, or water. People told Dhirubhai that getting people, materials, and technical support would be very difficult. But Dhirubhai, the man who was hailed for his vision, was confident about his dream and went ahead.

Soon, Dhirubhai and his team created one of the most coveted projects in Jamnagar between 1996 and 1999. The barren land was no longer an isolated place. It was turned into a bustling industrial hub. Not just this, Reliance created a green belt, which eventually lowered the temperature and improved rainfall. Within a few years, the place became Asia’s largest mango orchard.

Reliance Jamnagar Refinery turned tragedy into motivation

In June 1998, Gujarat was hit by a severe cyclone, which disrupted everything, including the Jamnagar refinery’s construction. Millions of properties were reduced to rubble, and there was the refinery, which too was hugely affected by nature’s wrath. However, the tragedy didn’t break the people’s belief. From employees, contractors, to labours, everyone came together and worked 24 hours a day to first save lives and then put the refinery back on track.

The world’s largest refinery was definitely a hope to many people, and they worked day and night to bring it back on its feet. As a result, the Reliance refinery was back to the pre-cyclonic phase within just 12 days. Not just this, in another 15 days, over 60,000 people came back to work. It was truly surprising to see how the refinery’s team brought the industry back and turned the tide in nature's favour. Reliance Jamnagar Refinery became the world’s largest single-site refinery complex.

The Reliance industry spent over USD 3.4 billion in capital costs to build the Jamnagar refinery. With a capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day, it is the world’s largest refinery, with a capacity of 27 million tonnes. Do you know that before the Reliance refinery came into existence, India's total imports of gasoline and diesel stood at over 10 million tonnes? But once the Jamnagar refinery began operations, total imports dropped to zero.

There were three phases of expansion of the Jamnagar refinery. The first was the refinery’s commissioning in 1999. In 2008, Reliance set up its second refinery at Jamnagar. In the third phase, which lasted from 2014-2018, more processing units made the refinery a global vision in the energy industry.
