Singer, Asha Bhosle, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 92 because of multiple organ failure. She had a career spanning more than eight decades, recorded over 12,000 songs, and left behind a legacy as one of the most versatile voices across varied music genres. Veteran actress, Mumtaz has been deeply affected by the demise of Asha Bhosle.

Veteran actress, Mumtaz sat down for an interview with HT City and remembered the final journey of Asha Bhosle. Mumtaz remembered how she wanted to speak to the singer in the hospital, but she could not do the same as she was critical. In the words of Mumtaz:

"I rushed when I heard she was hospitalised… I wanted to speak to her, but couldn’t as the doctors informed us she is critical. As I was leaving the hospital a few minutes later, her family called to say she had passed away. The next day I visited her home and when I saw Asha ji, her face had a certain noor.”

Mumtaz shares personal memories she had with Asha Bhosle

Mumtaz further mentioned in the interview with the publication that she remembered lying on the laps of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar when both used to do riyaz with their tanpuras. Mumtaz also remembered the time from the Diwali 2023 party when her dance video at the home of Asha Bhosle had gone viral. She had shared that Jackie Shroff had egged her to get her on the floor, but she was shy. For those who do not know, Mumtaz and Asha Bhosle had delivered hits such as Koi Shahri Babu from Loafer (1973) and Duniya Mein Logon Ko from Apna Desh, 1972. Mumtaz further revealed that Asha Bhosle would always tell her that the most difficult song of her career was Aaja O Mere Raja because of the voice variations.

Asha Bhosle was bestowed with the famous and prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan that too by the Indian government. She was also the recipient of two big National Awards- the first one for her ghazal named, Dil Cheez Kya Hai from Muzaffar Ali's 1981 period drama movie called Umrao Jaan. The second romantic melody was called Mera Kuch Saaman which was from Gulzar's 1987 cult romantic movie, Ijaazat.

Asha Bhosle's other hit songs include Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar, In Aankhon Ki Masti, Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja, Duniya Mein Logon Ko and Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main. The nation has been mourning the demise of the legendary singer whose last rites took place on March 13, 2026 at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
